azzah
Well I was caught one of my female venutus so I could put her in a breeding net for the last week of her holding her fry (this is the first time she has held) and within 2 seconds on being in the net she spat them all out and the won't pick them back up. The problem is they have half hatched so although they have the heads and tails formed but they all still have part of the egg attached. There are about 50 fry. What I want to know is my idea for an emergency egg tumbler work or am I wasting my time. I have taken one of these sponge filters. cut up some cloth and blocked off each end of the clear tube so the fry can't get out and just hooked up an air line and put it on a really low speed. Will this work or am I wasting my time? I only put the colony together 3 weeks ago so I am really happy they have already bred but would hate to lose these fry. This shows some of the fry in it

krellious
each time i have striped fish and the babies still have egg sacks they are fine. The bodies enable them to move so they should be ok
phatoscarlover
That will work fine, i probably wouldnt bother leaving them in there for much more than a day or 2 though, the fry are 90% formed already judging by the pic. fishdance
Why don't you modify it so the air bubbles do not hit the babies? Re-arrange & modify the order of segments so the air is introduced after the babies. The amount of water flow will not change significantly. azzah
Thanks all just have to keep my fingers crossed. Looks like im gonna have some electric yellow fry coming soon as well
rosco
just move the airline so the air is coming in from the top, and change the cloth for plastic fly screen. Then all you have then is water movement not direct bubbles, but well done on the design anyhow. I probably would have cheated and just thrown them into a sieve with an sirstone underneath for a few days because like Andy said they are pretty much fully formed. cheers rosco
azzah
Thanks all, thankfully they all survived. There is about 35 venustus fry in there, not a bad number considering this is her first time holding. Apparently once they get more experience they can have up to 80 fry at a time, I gonna have my hands full once that starts happening considering I have a colony of 1 male + 4 females.
