Hi Tony.

Here is a short list of directions.

1 Get some "Sanding Sealer" from your local paint trade centre.

They will know what it is.

2 lightly sand cabinet witnh 150 grade paper following the grain and apply 1 coat of sanding sealer.

3 Wait 24 hours. Then using 150 grade sandpaper lightly sanded it again and then apply your stain.

4 using 180 grade sandpaper lightly sand again and apply another coat of stain if it is not dak enough or even enough. If it is you can dilute it to 50% turps 50-% stain and re-applyand then sand again using 180 grade sandpaper

5 Apply 2 or 3 coats of gloss or satin clear polyurethane snading between coats.

Good luck.

there is also a stain made for Pine , Bunnings sell it. Otherwise follow the instructions above. I dont usually use a sealer but you should as it will make the finish a lot more uniform. Also- wear gloves!

Its a big job The sanding in the most important part, any rough parts will stain darker, especially any exposed end grain. (hence the sealer)

With the sandpaper, would you generally do it by hand, or use a power sander? If so, what type? Which would produce the better end finish?

Doing it by hand would obviously take longer, but would the power sander be too harsh? You mention to sand it lightly.
