bishop
I was sold these fish as Melanochromis Chipokae but I am not convinced. From my reading the pointed nose suggests Chipokae bit the half yellow tale suggests Melanochromis Auratus. I have three but none appear to be male so that option is out. I don't really mind which type I have but in order to buy a male I need to know. Any thoughts? http://picasaweb.google.com.au/geoff.perci...611841862814866 http://picasaweb.google.com.au/geoff.perci...611841862814882 P.S. Sorry about the scratches in the photos. They are currently in an old tank.
sicj
I think they are chipoke as the makring are different to auratus Follow this link down and you will see the difference between the males and females of both auratus and chipoke. ---> http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=...l%3Den%26sa%3DG They look like females so far John
Frontosa Andrew
I'm leaning more towards Auratus, due mainly to the markings on the tail fin, and that I've kept 'em before.
bishop
Thanks guys. One vote each. That really clears it up. Does anybody else want to have a go?
petshopdude
[hey dude me thinks it might be an aurtus, but time will most likely tell, maybe do the tour of a few shops see if you can find any to compare with
fongyfong
looks like a auratus or a female chipokee
Ged
I would say M. auratus as the juvenile M. auratus will have white lines, in addition to their yellow and black colouration. In the second photo it appears that they have a white line. The snout doesn't look pointy enough for M. chipokae. Having not kept them you may need to wait for a more definitive answer. How old are they as males will start to colour up at 6 - 9 months.
bishop
I can't give an age but they are now about 7cm. I would have expected a male to start to colour up at that size.
