easy does it
I had 2 Peppermint BN growing in a community tank, and removed one to add to my brothers small tank, which has no other inhabitants, and about 4 weeks later he noticed eggs floating. Being a complete novices when it comes to catfish, I assume this obviously means that ones a female, but does that necessarily mean the other Peppermint is a male, or will females lay unfertilised eggs? Would there be a chance that there was cross-breeding as there were other Regular BN growing in the community tank as well?
limegirl
Sounds weird! A catfish's eggs are fertilised as they are laid, not prior to it, so there is no way that these eggs have been fertilised by either the other pep or the common. Did you move any logs or ornaments that could have had the eggs in them? I don't know of female BN catties laying eggs without solicitation by a male ... easy does it
There is a bit of driftwood in there, but it had been there for 2 months and there had been no other occupants of the tank for that period. (The tank was re-cycled post-nasty boiling incident)
robdog013
a male has bristles on the end of his nose and a female doesn't if you ahve two of these its possible you have a breeding pair..
dobbin4
Mate it takes a m x f to have fertilised eggs,, Seems you have female,, they are not fertile untill the male does his bit and not as limegirl says. As they are laid u need a male to fertile them. They are unfertile till then. As robdog says males have the bristles so you should be able to tell. Females will lay eggs without the male.. easy does it
Both of the peppermints have a small line of bristles over their top lip, which I understand is common for their type. Thanks for the info, I can now conclude that I have no indication that their is a pair, and that female BN will lay eggs even without a male present??
