Moliro
How do people who work for the Tasmanian governement keep their jobs when they are so ridiculously stupid? I ordered 10 Neolamprologus leluipi through my LFS and on the day they were to arrive, I'm told that Tasmania no longer can import the "Lemon Cichlids" because they are now a restricted fish. WHAT??? I haven't been able to find the whole list of prohibited imports yet so I'm not sure on the scope of this banning but Come ON! If they can ban leluipi, then I'm sure they can ban all cichlids from Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria. So what are they scared of? These fish being let loose in the rivers and lakes producing menacing schools and outcompeting the native species? Yeah I'm sure alot of the trout would get dominated by these cichlids. And I'm also sure that they would last through the winter when the water temperature drops to 5 degrees. WTF???? If you own a fish store in TAS I recommend selling it because in 5 years time All fish imports will be banned. If anyone knows where to access the updated list of prohibited species please hook it up.
mcsx
yeh leluipi are an easy one to get so you could imagine the rest of the fish that are harder to get would also be on that list well thats not fair i love my tanganyikan's oh well hope for you that they havnt done a large ban
Josh
I doubt that it has to much to do with them establishing a feral population. Its most like due to the threat the could pose to Tasmania's fishing industries. If any fish bought to the Island got accidentally realised into the wild and was carrying a fish disease it could quickly spread and could do great harm to your major money earner down there. All I can say is bad luck on this one, I know the rules were very tight already have you tried ringing Animal Health (03) 6233 6875 and trying to sort it out with them. I doubt the rules changed over night and it might have been banned from bringing in your fish because of a silly quarantine problem. josh
Matty
Hey Moliro, welcome to the joys of fish keeping in Tasmania (I'm also in Launnie) Which store did you order them through? (PM me if you like) Staff of a certain store will actually tell you they're banned if they can't be bothered looking for them or if they've never heard of them. How long have you been in Launceston for? or fish keeping for that matter? Check out my post in this thread HERE and tell me what you think. It's just a basic run down of all LFS's in Launceston
Moliro
Yeah I could see it being a whole diseaese factor but mainland australia still imports them and the possibility of survival in a warmer climate is greatly boosted so why the ban in Tas? it's strange anyway. thanks for the number josh, I'll give em a ring and see if they have the whole list. hey matty, Pretty much just deal with Daniel at the Old Tudor, he's been pretty good at finding whatever's needed at the best price (but yeah you're right, not a huge selection in stock). I find all the other stores in town jack up their prices quite substantially so I don't really even bother going unless the Old tudor can't get them in through Aquarium Industries. But yeah, that's a pretty good run down on the shops here...I'd change Petlands prices from ookkaaayyyyyy to brutal though lol Been in Launceston 9 months and keeping Africans for 6 years. Do you know of anyone around here with lots of Synodontis multi.?
