hi everyone im new to the forum and was looking for advice with gold saum. I was wondering if you are able to sex these fishes when they are about 4-5cm, because i just purchased a so called trio from my LFS and they said it was 2 females and a male, but when i got it home, they all look exactly the same as each other. If anyone could help me on this topic, it will b greatly appreciated.

thanks

not 100% sure, but i would think that they won't like the idea of a trio, they can get a bit nasty, and they might kill he odd one out, just keep an eye on them, as for sexing bit hard i have found, but the female should be a bit duller then the male

Look for a pointed top fin on the male and a duller colour and more rounded top fin for a female. As for a trio forget it unless you have a big tank for the other fish to escape from the pair. When Breeding the male is extremely aggresive towards the girl so if you have two girls i would keep the other in a seperate tank incase he kills the other. I know it doesnt sound good but that is what i do with my rivulatus ( he has deceased one girl so far yet not bred ) as well as most of my other americans. These type of fish are AGGRESIVE by nature so please dont forget that but at the same time they are very entertaining.

Good Luck

Ron

I forgot to add that the 6cm fish seems to b bulging (i think due to getting heaps of the food - maybe a myth?) coz he/she got a wide stomach as seen on the picture, and she/he seems to be harrassing the 5cm fish a bit which makes the 5cm fish's fins go darker then usual. My uncle believes that the 6cm fish is a pregnant female, *shrugs* it'd b awesome if it was true.

thanks again for anyone who helps :clap

from what I can see with the shape of their dorsal/anal fins, they are either too young yet or perhaps girls.

I'm not a GT expert though

ohh it might make sense if they all female, never thought of that, mms yer thats y its made it so hard for me to sex them because people tell me to look for pointed fins but, they arent pointed at all more rounded *shrugs* thanks for ur opinion keep them coming :8

If the biggest fish is only about 6cm then they are most likely too young, watch them over the coming months as they pass the 10cm mark

you're right ash, they are all females, the 6cm fish dropped her eggs this morning after a 30% water change last night, and the 4.5cm fish is starting to bulge up (possibility eggs) so therefore i rung my LFS, told him that they were all female and asked to swap one back for a male. Voila finally i can distinguish the males and females, i'll upload some photos of the female and her egg and the new male so to help future rivalatus owners =)

Hi aszian I have gold saums to, I have 4 females and 1 male in a 5 foot tank .when they start breeding they don’t stop. Ill get some pics as soon as I can ,the males and females are easy to tell apart ,when I put some pics up you will see what I mean, hope you have a lot of room for babies.

hey chameleon awesome, i know how to distinguish them though now i got 2 females and a male myself in a 4ft, but yer it'll b awesome to see your fish's. Do they actually breed when theres multiple females in the tank? cause mine seems to run after the smaller one (both female and male) but shes a tough lil bugger, so im thinking of keeping it as a trio since im going to be getting a 6ft'r just for the gold saum trio which hopefully if they breed when they are larger they take opposite sides of the tank, just wana know if the male can actually do this btw. =) i'll post my pics up too when i get my card reader back :clap

Hi aszian, just had a look at my tank tonight one female left side of the tank she has eggs and female right side of the tank babies just hatching and I only have the one male in that tank, it looks so funny the male goes from one side to the other keeping the females away from each other, the male looks great he’s at his best :thumbup:P.S. the females are the same size same age if that helps.

good news!! my smaller female and male has seemed to produce some eggs and i saw the ritual between the two where they both chased away the other female and did their thing  haha looks like the other female is bulging up and wanting to breed too coz she is starting to wiggly in front of the male too. hahaha still surprised they are breeding at this size ..male 7cm, female 5cm, other female 7cm. hopefully i get my card reader back to show ppl the photos of the eggs too. haha looking forward to your picks chameleon :thumb

Awesome news guys, my other female has also dropped her eggs when i dropped terracota pot into the tank, its so awesome on each end theres eggs, and the first batch of eggs is going along nicely cause i can see the fry developing inside but theres also 2 or 3 fungus eggs which i hope the female will get rid of soon <_< im going to be getting a 6ft soon so tank space will no longer be a problem =)

oh what you do is go to a site such as www.photobucket.com where you can register a free account, then just upload your pictures using that, once all your required pictures are uploaded to that site, at the bottom of each of the picture there is a codes, copy the IMG CODE into your reply message area (which is this part that im typing on) and it will show up. good luck =)

congrats on ur first image post :lol1:

your fishes look awesome!! hehe update on my first batch of eggs = wrigglers, ive seperated the mother with the eggs using a divider so the male cannot get to it, the mother has seemed to catch the fries in her mouth and moved them to a kinda hole area where she can keep her eyes on them :clap next stop free swimming  and the 2nd batch of eggs shouldnt be too far off hatching prob 3 days :wub
