xzbit
I've got a sick female electric yellow. She has been in a holding tank by herself since she spat about 2 weeks ago, she was eating fine and then all of a sudden she developed a fews sores and is red on either side of her side fins and she has lost a few scales. She hasn't eaten much in the last couple of days. I have been treating her on melafix for the last 2 days and I did a 50% water change before I started the melafix, but it doesn't seem to be working? Do anyone know what's wrong with her and how I can treat her? Cheers, Xzbit
D6C1
Other fish with her? Temperature? PH, nitrates, nitrites etc? Without knowing anything else, I would up the temperature and add some salt.
robdog013
have you removed the fry, the fry may be nipping at her producing those sore to eat her slime coat, i have had a similar thing happen with other fish
xzbit
Unfortunately she passed, the temp was around 27.8 degrees, and she was by herself, fry had been removed! I'll check the water later, but will the water be affect since she was dead in it?
xzbit
Here are a few pics, very bad (I KNOW), but hopefully you can see what I'm talking about! Thanks, Xzbit
KIMO
Sorry to hear about your loss. I haven't got any advise for you, i'm sorry, but was wondering what she looked like before she laid her eggs and what was her behaviour prior to laying. i think my e.yellow female is pregnant but i'm not sure. I have a slightly larger male yellow so if she is pregnant, does that mean i may end up with fry??? Thanks for any advice. Once again, sorry that she died. KimO. xzbit
Hey KimO, Like most malawi fish e.yellow are mouthbrooders, which means they carry the eggs in their mouths. So a pretty sure sign your going to get fry is when the female has a mouthfull of eggs. At this point she will usually hold for about 28 days. I'm not really an expert on e.yellows, but I'm sure another one of the ace members can give you some more expert advice! Cheers, Ray
KIMO
Thanks ray. Spot on with info. I'm curious though as to how large they blow up before dropping the eggs. ie before the male and female do their "dance" Mine is getting quite large and is very reclusive. I even thought that she may be ill. I don't think its "bloat" as she is quite healthy looking and swims fine when she does come out, which isn't often. Any ideas?? Thanks again, KimO. xzbit
I don't really know, how large a female may get before she breeds? Are you certain that its a female? I am also not sure if it based upon there size that they will start mating. Just make sure you water conditions are right, i.e. weekly water changes of about 30% and constant conditions e.g. ph, gh & kh and they will soon be on their way to making you some fry! Do you just have 1 male and 1 female? If you do, you might want to add a few more females if you can. The "female" might be reclusive because the male is giving her a beating. KIMO
Unfortunately yes.....only 1 male 1 female. She doesn't look like she's getting bullied but then again i'm not watching the tank 24/7, so you make a very good point. I have been trying to get more females but how do you tell when all the LFS have e.yellows 2-3 cms. for sale??? The only large ones are huge, i'm talking 4+ inches. Too big for my mbuna community. My male is 5cms. and i think the other is a female because she was from the same batch and hasn't grown as much as the male. She also hasn't got as much black on her pectoral and anal fins. Anyway, thanks again for the reply, p.s. sounds like you know your yellows!! KimO.
xzbit
By no means am I an expert on e.yellows! All my info is just from reading on this forum!! At 5cm's it sounds like they might be a bit young to breed, although some people have had them breed around that age! Mine were around 12 months old before they started breeding and I was under the impression that they were all males!! I've only had a few mouthfulls so far with only a few fry so, I'm a beginner just like yourself. I know how you feel when your wanting for them to breed, but nothing's happening! Just be patient (I know, its hard!! Having had mine since fry, it's trying sometimes, but its well worth it to grow them up!) My advice is probably to get a batch of fry from one of the reputable breeders here from the classifieds and grow them up! At least you can be guranteed of the quality! and they're usually cheaper than the LFS! Good luck, they'll should be breeding in no time!!
