scott_to4
ok im just about to set up my 8x2x2 in the next few days and was wondering what sort of L/Hr pump i could fit in the sump. the tank has a total of 2 standpipes, one in each back corner. they are both 25mm PVC. what i want to know is is there any way i can work out how quickly they drain the water from the tank so long as they stay under water level? Without filling the tank first i mean. Anyone know an equation to work it out????? thanks?
kilroy
Mate you will comfortably be able to run a 3000-5000lph pump with 25mm.
scott_to4
well there are 2 25mm pipes and the 8x2x2 is close to 1000l so i wanted to run about a 6000L/Hr pump minimum as id like to turn the water over close to 6 times every hour
Satanoperca
Hi, If you want the tank to turnover 6 times and it is 1000lts and you are running a sump then I would suggest you will need a 10,000 lt/hr pump. You must take into account the head height (distance) the water is to be pumped back into the tank - I will assume 1.5mts. Pumps are rated with zero head height and the volume reduces the higher the water has to be pumped. To test how much water can flow via gravity through a pipe set up a simply experiment with two buckets and a piece of 25mm pipe. I am assuming that the 25mm pipe is the outside of dimension of the pipe and the inner dimensions is about 21mm. Cut a hole in the bottom of one of the buckets to suit the pipe. Tape pipe to bucket. Given the volume of the bucket, fill bucket with water covering hole. Uncover pipe and allow water to flow and time if takes to empty in seconds. Then use formula : volume of water in ltrs/ (time taken to empty water through pipe in sec)/3600 (to get to hours) = ltrs per hour. I will be surprised in a 25mm pipe will deliver the volume you require approx 2.7lts per second. If you are able to make the pipes larger like 50mm I would highly recommend this. scott_to4
i just went and had a look at the pipes, they are 32 mm outside diameter and about 29mm inside diameter. A little weird i guess when its sold as 25mm pvc pipe
Colfish
are you going to use both 32mm pipes to drain the water to the sump, or use 1 as a return pipe? the size of the pipe from the weir to the filter and the size of the spinner arm will also dictate the pump capacity. i would suggest using 32mm all the way to the sump
