littleV
hey guys I am considering this weekend changing my tank around, just wondering what type of sand i should use and do different types of sand effect the ph and other water parameters cheers
kilroy
Have you thought of Pool Filter Sand? Its about $13 for 25kg from bunnings and it is very clean, requires minimal rinsing, and does not trap debris like coral sand. I am in the process of changing all my tanks over to it. On the downside, it will not buffer your water at all. To get around that, I have bagged up some coral sand in some stockings and placed it inside my wet/dry filters and canisters. The PFS looks fairly realistic too.

justcichlids
i just changed a couple of tanks over to pfs and it looks the goods i use some realy white sand i bought from the lfs labelled as aquarium sand it looks fantastic and seems to keep the ph upbut i have no idea what it's made from and i can't get it any more the pool filter sand does look more natural and cost heaps less give it ago but you still need to wash it thoroughly first. cheers JD
justcichlids
edit: i forgot to mention one down side to using sand over gravel is if you have any plecos the poo tends to sit on top and looks more unsightly than gravel cause it sort of sinks into it, but it is fairly easy to vacuum. 2 bob worth cheers JD
littleV
cheers guys its not going to be with plecos or cichlids, just exotics so you think pool sand is the way to go

Richard
For looks id go for some silver sand. It's the stuff used in bird cages. Heaps fine (so fine that you might lose some gravel cleaning) but besides that it's a really nice colour and very easy for sand sifters to sift through and build bowers if you're looking at keeping them in the future. I've got some in my Jebo tank and it looks awesome with some brownish/grey slate and abit of green plant. I'll post a pic up when i can. However it doesn't effect the pH levels if you wanted a natural buffer. cheers, Richard
