monitron
The person that bred them would have a better idea than I, who has never owned them before. The photos on the web are all of mature adults. These are Juvenile. A bit of a smart alec answer.

dobbin4
I would guess that the fry are only 4cm ,,,,well thats what it saw at the auction,,, so even though you have been given a good answer { not smart } you would need to be pretty good to know there sex at that size,,My advice is to study them yourself ,,, even at that age the boys will be showing off and give you a good idea on sex and there colour ,, etc

CThompson
already did that. i am asking because they are young and hard to sex to the photos on the net. well you just answered your own question , you will just have to wait like we all do. I thought it was a perfectly straight answer. People need to not be so sensitive, and appreciate that the person has taken the time to answer a question when no one is holding a gun to their head to spend their time responding to the question. Unless somebody uses obviously flaming language, if in doubt of the thoughts behind a post, err on the side of caution and assume the person is not trying to create offence. Many Africans are not sexable till they mature, and even then a male can hold back his colours, as can a female display a pretty good approximation of a male (thinking flavus here). This is part of the pleasure of our cichlids. You’re right though, sometimes an experienced breeder may have some idea as to what sexes the young fish are, but that could be dependant on a lot of intangibles. For example they may have breed a lot of what ever species and seen them grow up and have some idea of sex ratios, they may even have a good eye and make a guess, but then they would have first had to take an interest to look for such a thing. But then if you asked me to sex young demasoni (sub 5cm) I'd have NO idea. Maingano, yellow, cobalts - ditto. BTW if anyone has any Chewere I am in the market for some, so please PM me if you have some. Craig
