mattyr
Hi, Could someone please help with my tank. It has very high ammonia and I am now looseing fish. I have good PH and did a 30% water change yesterday. I have lost 5 fish and moved 4 others to a different tank. I have 5 fish left and the tank is 219 litres. The ammonia level today is just as high as yesterday. Any ideas Please as I am worried I will loose the remaining fish.

Look for the cause.. eg build up of food in the filter or tank, dead fish hidden somewhere etc Large water changes(try to ph & temp match) with lots of prime... mattyr
Hi, I have the Aqua One 980 tank which has an overhead built in filter. I think the filter was not working too well yesterday. It is all fixed yesterday but still have the problem. Would it take a few days to fix the ammonia problem?
KIMO
At least a couple of days. You need to make sure u have enough surface area in there to promote beneficial bacteria growth. Maybe the overhead filter isn't cutting it. Better to have over filtration i think. Good Luck. KimO.
petdos
Hi ,i had the same problem with this type of set up ,firstly as standard(stuff suplied) wont do the job.1st fill your trays with as much matrix as they can hold, give your bacteria plenty to grow on,leaving room for your filter wool, disregard the hard black sheets they do diddly squat. As for the amonia add some SAFE and keep up the water changes, your test will still show amonia reading but the SAFE will de-toxify,if you have any other filters take the filter wool and squeeze the dark brown stuff that looks like dirt over your new matrix this will give your bacteria aboost along, stop feeding for a few days,it wont hurt the fish but your water needs to catch up,The bigest thing is to get the amonia de-toxified.hope this helps,my tank runs without a problem now ,good luck, pete. KIMO
Very good advise. Make sure you keep the water changes going even after everything has settled...keep that water CLEAN. Hope it all goes well.
mattyr
Thanks for your help. what do you mean by SAFE? Is it a chemical I can get from the LFS?
petdos
Thanks for your help. what do you mean by SAFE? Is it a chemical I can get from the LFS? Hi again, sorry mate ishould have told you what it was,SAFE is a seachem product you should be able get it from your lfs,its pretty much the same as prime but in a more concentrated powder form,i acctually use both but allways keep the safe on hand now just in case of an amonia blow out,if you were able to get some of the bacteria from yor other filtter you will see a diference in a day or so if ,its just like setting up a new tank.if you get to the absulute desperate stage you can ask your lfs if they can give you some of there wool from there sump and just squeeze this on your new matrix, though i must say that this not recomended practice as you dont know what you might put in your tank but as a last resort, good luck peter. YeW
Dose as instructed on the Prime bottle. Stop feeding immediately. Continue water changes - I recommend 30% daily with appropriate doses of prime. If you are using any kind of rift lake buffers - stop until the problem is resolved. Once ammonia & nitrite are 0 (a few days if it's just a spike) then feed every second day and then return to normal feeding.
