Ash
bigger stuff like red devils aren't suited to breeding in 4 foot tanks, the females tend to end up dead. Firemouths & blue acaras are good choices, you could also look at gold severums
pride
Archocentrus sajica or septemfasciatus are good small Americans to breed and not all that common like its cousin the good old convict. For a little larger in a 4ft you could try Nandopsis salvini , Hypsophrys nicaraguensis or Herichthys carpintis. All can be very aggressive when breeding but the parenting behaviour of Americans is worth it.
oakes
Archocentrus spilurum & Herotilapia multispinosa are a couple more in the small to medium size range. Sadly not as common nowadays.
dobbin4
You have been given some good advice above and i would say a 4ft is smallishfor these lg fish, but i have breed Jack Dempsey and Blue acara in a 2 fter !! & WTB is the place to go for some fry. Most people are having trouble getting to sell them so you should do well.
MitchWA
I had 2 blue acaras in a 4 footer by themselves and they bred like crazy. Every couple of weeks they would breed and every time they did, they'd eat the last lot of fry. As I didn't have another tank to transfer the fry into it just kept on going like this spawn after spawn. There was no real telling behaviour that they were going to breed other than the pair protecting one corner of the tank. Basically if you have a good male to female ratio, feed them on good food the rest is up to them. Good luck. HTH Mitch.
