Lemonfish
Hi guys, I have run the same set up now for about 2 1/2 yrs, 4x2x2 sump with eheim 1250 return and external 1200l canister for mechanical. Latex rock background, stacked slate structures and that's bout it. I have a mixture of cichlids........Venustus Male 13cmVenustus Female 11cmYellows x2 8cmStuartgranti Males x2 6cmRed Empress Male 14cmRed Empress Females x4 6-8cmLelupi x3 8cmSalousi Male 8cmMelan Auratus 13cmCobalt Zebra 12cmHongi Female 8cm4 x BristleysAs you can see a little mix up. I'm toying with outing all the females and the lelupi and getting a few more big males and just have a display with a good change in design, maybe just remove all rockwork and replace with a network of driftwood?? Or sell off everthing and do the whole single species or two species only set up?? Thing is I've had all these guys from juvies and grown quite attached, the lelupis are really out of place but look great and do a good job of moving the substrate. The female Reds are wasted as everytime they hold they loose the bubs to hungry Venustus. Yellows are characters. Stuartgranti is gorgeous and only catches your eye every now and again but when he does I thought about getting a new glass tank(as the one I have has a few scratches)and starting over with new plumbing, new lighting, stand, hood......I think it must be a mid life crisis, just fancy a make over Wouldn't mind a few ideas or suggestions from you guys. brucem
You're a prime candidate for another tank!! I reckon your mix sound good. But I can identify with where you're at. I have a couple of tanks and sometimes swap fish in the main display tank. It makes a nice change and some different things to look at. I have some leleupi in my tank and really like the fact that they are smaller and different shaped to many of the malawi's. I have a few tanks for my colonies and he display tank for fish I don't really care whether they breed or not. the funny thing is the fish usually like to breed in the display tank. As for the holding red emps, it may pay to strip the fry from them beofre they are released and place them in a fry saver before they turn into lunch. Good luck with it. Lemonfish
Cheers Bruce, The problem is I have a second 4x15x15 in the garage separated into 2. I use it for a holding tank and a grow on. I'm trying to lighten up the time spent on the hobby so I'm deciding on males only. Will the males hold good colour without the presence of girls, I fancy a nice Dimi male but I'm concerned he may take a fancy to a few of the others. New list...... Venustus Male Dimi Male Red Empress Male Blue Zebra Male 2 Yellows Auratus Male Salousi Male Anymore suggestions for about another 6 good looking males? Cheers Damon
justcichlids
throw a male dolphin or two in. they are awesome looking fish and don't seem to be overly aggressive. definitely a dimi ive got one and they fit in nicely. if you don't mind mixing tangs and malawis gold face compressiceps are real characters. and i didn't see elec blues on the list you can't go past these guys for colour. just a few simple suggestions, not too ott. cheers JD
