kyle34
hi all, i have 1 male and 4 females rostratus, in a 6ft tank, my male keeps on bashing the hell out of the girls, i have already lost 1, so i thought adding more girls will help him, but nope hes still bashing them. I think he is just really horney and wants to offload, i think the females must think hes an ugly dudE if there is no takers, But watching him flare up and his colours are just unreal. What i want to know is there anything i can do to fix this behaviour, i have already put him in a sinbin for now, has his own 2fter for the night. cheers

Stuart74
Kyle, I would suggest you make up some sort of divider a sheet of clear perspex with a heap of holes drilled into it is a quick and easy way. Otherwise if you have a floating fry saver big enough to float him in in the same tank that also helps. What size tank have you got them in and what's the ground cover like A fish that size needs a large tank to patrol and the females will need plenty of cover to get away from his "horney and wants to offload" problem

kyle34
thanks guys for the advise, the tank is a 6ft x50cmx50cm i have sand as the substrate and sandstone rocks with plenty of caves, Put the male back in the tank today, had to remove 1 of the females as she was badly beaten, dosnt look like she will survive the night, have her in the sin bin now with melafix. Is rostratus best kept as a pair as i have heard people saying they put the 2 in a separate tank to breed. Most of the sites on there profile say they should be kept with a few females. Awsome fish the male the colours look great, maybe i might have to sell them yet. just cant keep on affording a fish at 50 a pop. sorry didnt mean the post to be rude. just want to state what i was seeing in a differnt perspective. Made me have a laugh as well when i read it again. But very disapointed that i will probably have another loss. cheers all
Citypainter
I kept a colony of them once and had the same problem. I added a colony of M chipokea. They seem to harmonize and both colonies bred in the same tank at the same time. I crowded the tank and territories disappeared and the whole tank was active. I also hid ag pipes in the rockwork and floated some as well. I hope that helps.

Thanks citypainter, i took your advise and went and bought some chipokae today, i also added in some pvc behind the rocks he has already seem to be calming down and treating his girls with a bit more respect. It looks like a girl is taking to his fancy asd well, as her egg duct looks like its about to pop out, slightly sticking out and hangin with the male a bit and going in circles with the male, while the male flutters, Here is a shot of my tank setup still not finished, and keen to get a few more adult females chipokae thanks for the advice here is my tank, not finished with setup. Barca888
I must be lucky as my male is quite good to my female and the smaller unknown individual. However my guy isn't as stunning as yours. When he does wanna breed he does chase her, however he gives her breaks.
kyle34
the girls were down the other end of the tank, up in the top corner, i have 3 girls left, i have already lost 2 and paying 50 a pop dont know if i can bare myself to loose another 50 or so depending on how many i wanted to buy. just want to see how they go, so far really good, with the adding of the melanchromis chipokae. this is a shot of the male when his colours were flairing trying to attrack the female. the colours have now become a little dull, and he not hitting on the girls to much now. will get another shot soon and will get the girls in. cheers
