Duboisi Breeding?

Hey,

About a week ago i bought 2 duboisi to start up my colony with, they are about 5cm. I vent sexed them and to me it looked like a male and a female.

I just went down then to check on them and I'm sure the female is holding. They have been displaying breeding signs since i put them in their tank.

I just want to know at what size do they start breeding? and at what size is the male able to fertilise the eggs?

Thanx

Andrew

Not sure about sizes since duboisi tend to grow quicker than most other T variants and I haven't had experience with duboisi.

However, my moorii Ts first held to term when they were about 12 months of age. They held for the first time a few months earlier. They started breeding constantly from about 2 years of age.

I have read about females that have held to term at about 8-9 months of age.

Most people notice that they start getting into full swing with their breeding when they are 2 years of age and older.

Gday mate, 5cm seems a bit small to me, but I have Mpulungu fry that are currently spawning at that size and they are only 6-7 months old. They don't hold for more than a day or so though.

Usually the females are mature first but the males are not fertile. That is why successful breeding won't usually happen until 9-12 months. As Jamo said, it takes a couple of years for them to get it right and start breeding well.

I see you have been trying to get some more dubs, which is good because two is not enough. You will need another 10-15 in my opinion. I have 12 duboisi 'maswa' that are all over 3 inches. They are now over a year old and none have bred successfully yet. Plenty of mouthfuls, but no fry...

Good luck with it.

A bit off topic but just going on from where Shane said his Ts don't hold for more than a day or two. That brings back memories, in those early days when the colony was getting the hang of it, there would be spat eggs on the bottom of the tank, sometimes quite a few.

When the colony is older and the males are mature, you find no eggs scattered around, they hold all of 'em pretty much.

Alright thanks guys, that pretty much answers my questions.

I've sourced another 12 F1 at 4cm so hopefully picking them up in the next few days.

The fish in question one of them still has his juvenile pattern but i can see his mature pattern coming through and thats the one i thought was a male, and the one i think is female has its mature pattern.
