any help would be great cheers

Hey mate.

If you move them to a tank of their own i would say they would breed more.

a 2 foot tank would be big enough for them.

Good luck

G'day Brendon

I don't know if they would breed more in a 2 foot tank but at least the fry would not get eaten :lol4:

Bristlies will breed almost anywhere. As Alan once said I reckon they would breed in a puddle on his fishroom floor. The trick is to keep the fry alive.

So that means either you move Mum and Dad into a seperate tank or you move dad and the fry into a frysaver.

The best option is to go for a 2 foot tank as you can be a little lazy and if you miss the eggs all is not lost, if you don't have the luxury of a spare 2 foot tank you will have to keep an eye on dads cave. For those with normal/poor site use a torch and keep looking in. Now this sounds like a bit of a plug for my caves and I suppose it is, but I got sick of bending down on the floor and shinning a torch in. so I invented this cave.

Now all I do is lift up the cave and either I will see eggs, fry or just dad.

It makes it pretty easy because whenever I do any maintenance on the tanks I lift up the caves and look. The dads get used to it and rarely if ever do they kick the eggs out. (Longs fins excluded - with these little buggers if I walk past the tank they toss the eggs out :blink )

I have seen upto 3 batches of eggs/fry in a cave, this occurs more frequently when an aggressive area outside of his cave exists. In a tank by themselves dads usually throw the fry out a lot earlier. Who says fish are dumb!

In a tank where the fry are in danger from the tank's other hungry inhabitants I then move dad, cave and his eggs and or fry into a frysaver.

Goodluck with breeding these beautiful fish, they are great.

How about Male to Female ratio's

I have been told that once BN start breeding they dont stop but that it can put alot of stress on the male BN? I have been told after a bactch of fry to remove the male for 2-3 weeks to let him recover. is this true? if so would it be better having 2M to 1 F?

G'day

Just keep good quality food available for the male. He will breed when he is ready to. If he loses condition and you become concerned about his condition then remove him so that he cannot breed and feed him well until you are happy with his condition.

PS A good ratio is 1 male to 2 or 3 females. (He can have multiple batches of eggs at the same time :8 )
