Lion King
Hi Fong, It is normal for a newly setup tank. It is due to the ammonia(NH3) level in the water is increasing while the filter hasn't enough bactery to convert the ammonia into Nitrite and then Nitrite into Nitrate (Nitrogen cycle). Ideally don't change the water, just let it be as long as you don't have any fish in the tank (fishless cycling) or if you do have fish, make sure that the fish is a hardy fish and check the water regularly and be sure that the ammonia level hasn't reached the max allowed for fish. By the way just for your info that there is away to speed up this cycling process, that is by using the well established filter. hope it helps. motorman
If it has gone a white colour then its a bacterial bloom This is caused cos there isnt enough bacteria in the canister to eat the ammonia and bacteria in the water is eating it instead It will clear itself once the bacteria starts to grow in your filter Doing water changes will slow this process down as some of the freshwater will affect your filter Do you have any fish in the tank? electricyellowz
If you dont have any fish dont worry about it. If you have another tank swap the filters and the bacteria from the established tank should clear it up soon.
luket
Hang on a sec guys...He didn't say weather there were fish present or not....if not there can be no ammonia unless it has been added to the tank as either fish waste, rotting food or simply adding pure ammonia to kick start things off yet. Fongy...Have you put fish in yet? If so has the tank been cycled? ....Or is the tank fishless and just starting up? If this is the case it could be sediment from the substrate settling...new tanks almost always are cloudy especially with the addition of gravel. If there are fish in there then as the others have mentioned it is probably a bacterial bloom...hold off on adding more fish or even feeding for a day or two (fasting won't hurt the fish), I've found if it is a bacterial bloom causing the cloudy water then 30 - 40% water changes will help. Although I wouldn't recommend doing water changes in a cycling tank.
