Ozboc
Went to the LFS to have a look at what stock they have and prices - told the guy i had recently lost all my fish in 1 week to a very aggressive strain of white spot -- he suggested to me that i should have a UV Steriliser. Now to my way of tihnking this would not be took good for a tank , especially if you have a biological filter - but ideal for killing bugs -- can i have your opinions on this ? spedwards
Every tank has a bio-filter... Whilst the UV will kill anything suspended in the water and happens to flow through the UV unit. So, the bacteria colonies attached in your filters, substrate, ornaments etc, will not get killed off. I run one on my tank (actually about ready for a tube replacement) and the tank is pretty well self sustaining. Does it make a difference, who knows? But I feel safer knowing I'm doing everything I can to prevent bad things happening.
Cuong
Well worth the extra sense of security and it is effective at what it does. It definitely keeps the bacteria count down, and it's non-selective which may be bad (reducing good bacteria) and a good thing (reduces harmful bacteria). Although there's speculation about breeding fish in UV sterilized tanks as the fry may be more vulnerable once sold and in non-UV tanks.
antz
a guy at the lfs said the cheap ones arent worth it really since they just make the water clear and kill some germs. but the proper ones will do evrything and do it well.
