Someone more technical than me can compare their capabilities in a more scientific manner. I can only share my experience.

We run almost every tank in our fishroom (in excess of 65 now) on side drop filters changing over for a number of factors including how efficient they are. Below are also some of the species traditionally requiring exeptional water conditions thriving in our tanks including full grown American colonies.

Ahhh look at all those bazracks :wub

Jason I certainly don't have big fish, but in terms of maintenance they are about the same amount of work as a sump, and the only disadvantages for me is that I have to keep a heater in each tank, and I need to change water in those tanks separately. On my sumped system I simply drain and refill the sump, and that's the water changes done for 12 tanks. I also have 2 heaters in the sump instead of one in each of the 12 tanks.

The advantages of side-drops are you don't have to run a big water pump, you don't need all that plumbing, there's less places to spring a leak, and you can run different water conditions in each tank if you need to.

The media is easier to deal with when it's dirty also. I just remove the top half of the filter wool (leaving the bottom half which is less dirty and full of nice bacteria) and chuck it in the bin. I then replace it with wool bought at spotlight, and I think it costs me about $10 every 6-12mths to change the media in 6 tanks.

I really hate removing the media from my sump and cleaning it :B

Cool huh :hug: all hand painted in water proof plumbers paint (I am sure it too has a technical name that eludes me)

Dave has an article here which shows how they are done. The pictures are a bit small so if you need help working it out just let me know Jason.

I think the same article was also written up in the latest NSWCS magazine (complete with ye olde pyramid jokes).
