bassoonboy
Hi All, My peppermints have had babies and they've left the log and have, as far as I can see, lost their egg sack. I've given them algae wafers, zuccini and peas and only a few seem to be able to find the food. I think I must have dumb peppermints Should I catch them, rip the tank apart, and place them in the fry saver so the food is on top of them or will they find their way to the front of the tank where the food is? Cheers, Pat

Cheers, Pat Hi Pat, To increase your success with them most fry are better off in a smaller tank or saver for the reason that you mention ....just ensure that the leftover food is cleaned out each day. Cheers, Pat G'day Pat Methinks you need to be catching them out. Also try some spirulina flake, crushed up into a powder. In the wild when they emerged from their cave they would have gone into the slime/sludge and found a rich source of foods that is everything that a growing kitten requires. Unfortunately we like to keep our tanks "clean" and this means that we ae removing their natural food source. By placing them into a frysaver (And not just one of my good ones I do run out at times and revert back to the ones that I used to use and have demonstrated how to build at the NSW Cichlid Society meetings, the ones with the air uplifts in them ) they are in a much smaller area and so they seem to be able to find their food. Mind you at times I still seem to remove more food than the kittens eat but that is another story. Aline is also right when she says you can put them into a smaller tank. We have 18 inch tanks that we use for such purposes although the fry generally go into a frysaver first and then into the 18 inch tanks. Lastly please remove all uneaten foods. The left over food will foul the water and cause an ammonia spike, thiswill not lead to happy kittens! Pics???? Best of luck cya Matthew

Cheers, Pat I have had the most success in keeping them in a fry saver in the same tank for a while instead of using a different tank. I have found them a little fragile with changing water conditions in a small tank. After a couple of months I move them into a separate tank.
