Ben ← just a note of caution be sure to ascertain if it has been treated with a fire retardant chemical most of these materials are polyester also beware of pillow stuffing, this can be treated with anti bacterial agents, to ensure hygeine and odor free saving money can be tricky
wui39
Tell me about it, might just have to go to a LFS and have the peace of mind.

Ash
if you're worried, use it on a spare tank with some expendable fry or something. Stacks of people use it & I've never heard of a problem.
Colfish
Tell me about it, might just have to go to a LFS and have the peace of mind. ← i have seen various grades of this material, some feel soft and silky others feel more coarse and springy. the soft/silky one will filter out more finer particles than the coarse one, but will not stand up to a lot of wash/reuse. whereas the coarser one will wash/reuse may times, making it much more economical. IF the pillow wading from clarke rubber is treated with antibacterial agents, i certainly would not be using it in a filter that relies upon bacteria to clean the water that keeps my fish alive. i'm sure there are different types of these materials, as i said, just be sure to check it out. don't go and buy a bag full than ask 'why are my fish dying' be sure, be safe, be happy
steve24cro
i dont know why people use filter wool at all, i think its a bad idea, as it always clogs filters real quick, reduces flow rate alot! I know im going to get alot of arguments here, i guess this is just my opinion. I have taken all filter wool out of my canisters and they run alot better, maintain flow rate or flow rate doesnt drop as dramatically. I use 2 sponges instead, one in bottom tray (as per normal in canister filters) and one up top in the last tray. My tanks are crystal clear. just wondering if anyone is doing the same thing>? wui39
I also don't use filter wool in my main cannisters, I just needed a lot for another cannister that is for pure mechanical filtration.
