Holes drilled in base of tank

Hi

I have two 35mm holes drilled into opposite ends of the base of my tank. I am not going to set up for trickle / sump filtration at this stage and was wanting to know whether anyone had used these holes for the intake of cannister filters? I have seen it in operation at St George Aquarium and was intending in setting up a couple of Eheims and utilising the holes for the intake of the cannisters. The returns would be via the normal spray bar over the top of the tank.

Has anyone tried this? Any information on setting up / plumbing / risks would be much appreciated.

Also, where are the best places to buy piping piping, valves, etc?

Thanks

Nick

One prob I can see is that the Eheim intakes are 19mm (3/4 inch) or the larger ones are 20mm/22mm (1 inch) i think, so u will need to make the intake wider so that it fits in the drilled hole. Head over to Reece and get some pressure pipe and some reducers ( 35mm down to 19mm or whatever the diameter of the intake is ).

Cant see any probs with the actual filters they will be gravity fed which is the same as siphoning..

IMO, set up a sump filter, cheaper, better, easier to clean, more room for media and did i mention a lot cheaper than a couple of decents eheims?? unless u have the eheims already that is...

I have just purchased a setup from St George with this configuration.

Will let you know at the end of the week how it goes.

No idea on sizes or what not, however make sure you buy levered taps to sit between your tank floor (intake and outlet) and the hoses to your canister so you can shut off the water flow.

If you need to pull your canister out for cleaning or maintenance, you dont want to be holding your fingers over the end of hoses for hours on end.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

Basically, I already have two Eheim 2228's that are just sitting around. I also have the holes drilled into the tank so thought I would make use of both as using the holes for the intakes will remove the sight of the usual u-bend intake pipes (I can easily hide the new intakes in the base of the tank with rocks).

I have copied the setup used at St George and Manly aquarium, i.e. sourced the same plumbing pipes, etc which were very hard to find as they are not the standard size used for plumbing. The ones I have used are much smaller but fit the larger size eheim hose.

I am definitely planning on using eheim taps between bottom of tank and cannisters.

Huzzy, let me know how your setup goes.

Thanks

Nick

just make sure that the intake has a mesh or something over it so your gravel wont be able to get it there and block up your filter.

don't see why it wont work, it might be even better since all that water is pushing down and make your flow rate better.

the other thing about it is that you don't have to prim it, just open the taps and the water should fill up the filters.
