Bad Bad Times

Hi,

Came home this afternoon and the left centre brace from my 5x2x2 was lying inside my tank with the 2 lids. Somehow the silicone detached itself from the inside of the front panel.

Luckily no glass broke and no livestock was hurt clap.gif

unfortunately with the brace gone the tank has bowed slightly in the left side of the front glass panel.

its 10mm glass, and there is still one 20cm brace down the right side.

Should this still be able to hold til the weekend?

If not, im screwed

Advice please

ta

Mark

I had a standard 5ft centre brace collapse on me as well. dropped the water down to below half way and it stopped bowing. had it there for close to a week.

try to get the fish out if u can...transfer them to another tank, and then dry out the tank and reseal with silicone.

Sorry to butt in, but im curious to know if that since this has happend and the glass has been bowed a little, will this decrease how long it will last. Will it cause hair line cracks in the pannel. Just intreasted to know

i just took 25% out, thats the most i can do without stressing the fish too much, it was overstocked as is.

I cant move the fish anywhere else,

i cant do anything til wednesday, ill have to see if the LFS can board them for me, otherwise ill have to sell off the stock.

this is why i always get my tanks over made, like go next size up in glass with larger rims all round top, my friend has a 6x2x2 with no bridges at all, made in 12mm glass with 15 base, and larger edge rims all way round.

Even though 10mm is fine for tanks that are 2x2...in my opinion they should be built in 12mm all round

Had this happen to my 4x2x2, but it had a single centre brace that actually cracked in half due to too much heat from a MH lamp sitting too close to the brace. blink.gif

What was worse was that I couldnt lower the water level as the filtration was a corner overflow! I basically had to rig some external support for the tank and repair the brace whilst it was still full!

61cm x 61cm is actually a little conservative for 10mm glass. Virtually all tank makers will do 65cm x 65cm in 10mm glass. If it was made with 12mm and the tank maker was flimsy with silicone application, the brace would still have dislodged itself. Thicker glass will not always be the answer, it often comes down to build quality.

Count yourself very lucky you didn't find your water all over the floor and all your fish dead.

You need to take the water down to 50% - even if it means doing daiily water changes to keep nitrate down. Also stick in an airstone to ensure there is enough oxygen in the water.
