Camo
Hey I have a couple of fish that i am interested in and i think they will be pretty dear so i thought i would ask. Ok i would like the price availabilty of the following Alligator Gar (These i want to keep the most) Peacock Bass Siamese Tiger Red Tailed Catfish The sizes would be the 10-15cm mark Cheers Cameron
wui39
Red tails were going for about $1000 for a pair around the 15-20cm mark. Gars around the $300 mark I believe. Not sure about Peacocks although I've heard real Siamese Tigers are hard to get.
sofiko
Last time I looked (10 days ago), an lfs at Hurstville had about four 30 cm RTC's, each for $280.

Camo
Hey There are alligator gars at St George aquarium. Cheers Cameron
Alex
They are spotteds at st george. Once you know what to look for gars are quite an easy fish to ID, with the only real confusiom being between spotteds and floridas. Camo - I would think that if you can not distinguish between a spotted gar and a alligator gar you have not done anywhere near enough researc and prior planning to keep this majestic beast. Camo
Hey Well Alex the ones at St george says that they are ALLIGATOR GARS on the tank they are in. Now i would think St george would not be stupid enough to confuse them and if they have shame on a massive aquarium like theres for getting it wrong and no i have not done any research on these fish at all thats why i am asking the price first. . I am not goin to research and research then find out the fish i have been researching is $2000. Cameron
10050460
well, i've noticed that all these big fish prices have dropped huge amount over the last couple of yrs! in asia they are worth peanuts, its because it is hard to get here so it demands a premium! but i guess its slowly becoming more easily available and people are finding that its not such interesting fish to keep bar its size. the only fish i can think of that still commands a huge price is the asian arowana(scleropages formosus) due to its uniques. Arowana are still expensive although some of the more desirable catfish still carry a huge price (size relative to price)
Camo
Hey Yeah i do agree that prices have come down but some of those fish out there it would take me a year to save for. lol. Cameron
yellow
one thing to take into account when considering these types of fish is not only the innitial cost but also the cost of feeding them.big fish =big appetites =big dollars

Ducksta
Yep they've been labelled Alligator Gars for a few years now, they still aren't (If they are new stock that arrived recently I will happily retract that)
wui39
hmmmm have st george had any new stock recently??? better not turn this into a "st george is now crap thread" in regards to the rtc, sooty is selling them at 35cm male 50cm female (at least the female was bigger last time i saw them) for $1000
Alex
Yep they've been labelled Alligator Gars for a few years now, they still aren't (If they are new stock that arrived recently I will happily retract that) ← They are the same Spotteds that I saw when I visited about 18months ago. They were a 12" fish last time i saw them. I doubt they are pushing more then 20" now. On the small side for a true gator. Their were two true alligator gars at campsie when I visited, take a look at them then compare them to a spotted. I know my monster fish very well. They may have even got new gars, bjut I am yet to see any true gators surface in the recent weeks. here are some of my gars - all SPOTTEDS. variable patterns. Camo
Hey Well thankyou ducksta. So they are the spotted gar. Well shame on st george. I am not a lover of that place anymore. Back on topic. Alex they are some really nice gars there mate. If you dont mind me asking how much did you pay for them and at what size. Also a little bit of info on them would be good like water qualitys and food as such. Top gars mate how big are they. Arnt you afraid that the nose of the gar could bend or get a pimple thing like dimi comps get from time to time? Cheers Cameron
pride
Does anyone know what the little Archocentrus type looking cichlids are living in the display tank with the massive gars and red tail cats @ Campsie? Are these guys large spilurus? Amazing how they don't end up as food in that tank. I love watching that tank and the other displays when I go there......
