My Cichlasoma festaes finally spawned!

These guys hatched last wed (14th). I reckon there's about 50 or so, from probably close to 1000 eggs. So far they are looking good and being well looked after by both parents, particularly the female who continually gathers the stray ones in her mouth and spits them back into her corner (see 5th photo) meanwhile the male swims round the tank on guard duty.

So far they've been letting me get fairly close to the tank (can usually get the lens about 10cm from the glass) but they're sure to let me know if I'm getting too close! The female 'charges' towards me and even hits the glass on occasion, while the male displays his aggressive colours (yellowy-orange with thick black stripes) and puffs up his jaw and gills.

What a nice fish Waz......the colours are astounding. You got any pics of the male by any chance?.  clap.gif

I actually posted a few pics of the male a couple months ago on this forum. here's the link:

These were taken when he was in the display tank, before I found him a mate. You can see his stripes better in these pics, whereas when he was in breeding mode he dropped the stripes and displayed more of a spotted pattern, and was generally a bluey-green colour.

very nice Waz, what size tank have you got the pair in? I would love to one day setup a tank for a pair of festae. Good work!

They are in a 6' x 14" x 18" at the moment and seem to be happy enough. hug.gif

I had intended to put them in a 6 x 2 x 2 but both these are full of geophagus and I don't want to move them - so the festae are stuck in the skinny 6 footer for the time being. cool.gif
