Ash
Hey all, I've been using Hagen/Nutrafin test kits for ages but one thing that has annoyed me is with their nitrate test kit, once you get past 20ppm it's really hard to distinguish between the purple shades, even then there isn't that much seperating 10ppm & 20ppm. What brands have a more distinguishable colour chart? Cheers Ash
MikeWs Fish
I use the Sera one but honestly dont do too much nitrate testing, unless i am testing the claims of products that claim to remove nitrates (and have done so).
Ash
What is the Sera colour chart like?
Ged
I use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Professional Master Test Kit and have found the tests are easy to use and read. I have trained the students to do the tests and I have not had a problem with them mis-interpreting the colour chart. I don't know about buying individual kits (i.e. Nitrate) but I would presume that it is the same as the Master Kit. I also have a piece of white laminated card that students use to hold the test sample against to get an accurate colour reading.
Colfish
hi ash i'll back Ged up on this one, quick, easy ,reliable no nonsense kit. also as Mike W, i don't test everything these days, but it's handy to have, if a tank doesn't look quite right cheers; Colin
patchy
i'll third Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, it goes from yellow to red. good for 0-40ppm i say and if you got a good eye then make that 0-80ppm, after that it's just red but who really needs to go that far. 10 drops of both bottles (must shake one) and wait 5 min, too easy! The only criticisem i can come up with is the test tubes can break easily (broke one taking the cap off once) and they always want to fall over! Fullmetal
I've used both Sera and Hagen and I'm currently using Hagen. The Sera chart is 0 to 40 and is in 5 colours. It goes from yellow to red with orange/brown colours in between and to me it's easier to distinquish than Hagen ones.
fman
Ash I also use the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Professional Master Test Kit. The instructions are well written, and the colours are easy to interpret. I've noticed that my LFS uses the same. Cheers, Frank
