sorroz
Hi Alex , What are you calling spangled pike?? is it the lepidota/saxatalis ?? Kevin
Alex
Indeed it is the common name for any of the pike in the saxatalis complex.
sorroz
There is one breeder of them over here who is having good success with breeding them. Not sure what they are selling for in the shops ,but i think they are around $15 - $20 at 5cm ish privately. Let me know if you want any other info and i will ask him, as he does not get on the computer alot. Kevin
Alex
This is why i ask - my second spawn from this pair, also have another proven pair. Not the best quality pics, had to squeeze between a wall and the fish tank to get them. Will update the photos as the eggs hatch and the fry grow. Not the hardest of fish to spawn, as I found out with my first spawn the only real problem is getting enough food to the fry before they canabalise each other - which can be tricky at best! Alex
Cheers for the reply. The female is actually giving the male a bit of a hard time (nothing he can't handle), which is contradictory to everything I have once believed about these fish. Have a smaller pair that look like doing the deed soon. Seems like it's that time of year for fish. Have 8 batches of eggs being fanned by parents at the moment. Time to set up a few more fry raising tanks, I think .
Alex
I also turned the intake pump off and set up some large sponge filters in the tank. I think the fry would almost certainly get sucked into the filter. Not the best spawn location choice by the pair, that rejected pots and bits of slate for the pump, in true cichlid fashion! D6C1
Thats looking great mate. Well done. Switching the pump off was definitly a good idea. As soon as those things became wrigglers in a few days, they would have been sucked up!
Devil
Awsome looking fish you got there Alex . My mate spawned some down here (brisbane) About a month ago they were wrigglers then the parents ate them??.. Stange because the parents were awsome parents so i herd nothing even got past the half way mark on the tank without copping a very bad beating. Tim. Alex
They are almost completely free swimming, only a small amount f yolk sac left. I siphoned out about 1/3 of the brood last night into a fry tank. Let the rest with the parents. Even if the olds eat them, I will still have 80 or so to grow out.
