Lucifer
Anyone know where i can get some Lake Kutubu Rainbows? Or who imports rainbows from PNG. Im in the Sydney area, but will get from inerstate if they can be transported. Thanks
Daniel
Why dont you go to your lfs and get them to check the wholesale lists AI and Bayfish. Will probably cost you somewhere between $8-$15 per fish with 100% mark up. Atleast one of them should have M. lacustrus. I did see lacustrus the other day at a shop in Auburn, but as per usual with this shop, the price was ridiculous. I think $50 each from memory. Their mark up must be 500-1000% on rainbows ! Ged
Bayfish have 4cm M. lacustris on their current stock list.

Daniel
Lucifer, Try AI as well. AI have a greater range and I usually find their prices better than Bayfish. M. lacustrus are very nice lookers !

Auburn has one of Sydneys largest range of native fish and you will pretty much find all available rainbowfish in store. Auburn source larger specimens for sale, why sell a 3cm bosemani, salmon or lacustris with no colour for $10-15ea when 6cm ones are colouring. worth the $50 a pair in most peoples eyes. If you want range and quality you know where to come otherwise drive all over town and see where that gets you. FYI there is currently an application before Dept. Environment and Heritage to have Boesemani, Lacustrus, Praecox and Werneri join incisus on the allowable imports list. If these applications go through it should mean we are able to offer larger imported fish at a much cheaper price than what is currently the case. As with anything it is supply and demand. AdamR
Besides the point raised by Shovelly. Think of 2 things 1.) Firstly in your interest it isnt a good idea to publically attack a sponsor who keeps this website free for your use. 2.) Secondly look at the quality of fish from the other shop to that of Auburn. I for one am happier to pay an extra couple of dollars for something which is good quality and more reliable healthy. But I guess you might not feel the same. Shovelly, You obviously have an interest or work at that shop. I am not attacking it whatsoever, but I can assure you rainbows at this shop are seriously overpriced. I know this from the wholesale lists and I have bought Rainbows on many occasions (often from lfs) and the quality at this shop is no better than others. Sure, they have a large range of Rainbows, this is true. We are here on this forum to help eachother, and often that means finding different things at fair to competitive prices. I was pretty sure I saw $49.95 per fish, but perhaps I was wrong, my apologies if this is the case. If you think they were 6cm, well your eyes are not the same as mine, I would put them closer to 4.5cm. In fact I am almost certain you are wrong with 6cm. If you think $50 for a pair of 5cm bosemani or $40 for a pair of 3cm praecox is good value, well good for you and hope you buy plenty of them. I would beg to differ. Also, it is worth noting for any keen Rainbow followers, that there is an Australian Native hobby group in Syd, Bris & Melb. Contact one of the members from that group (details on the ANGFA website) and they may put you onto breeders. Alternatively, there are commercial breeders in Darwin and QLD who produce certain rainbows. And some of them sell to the general public.
limegirl
Not my argument, but ... Daniel actually said "a fish shop in Auburn". He didn't publically attack anyone. I think it is more eroneous for people with vested interests to publically attack other members on the forum - it doesn't look good. And besides, Rainbowfish are one of the most variously priced fish. The retail price can easily vary by over ten dollars for similar quality fish, so it pays to shop around. Daniel
Thankyou Limegirl. You are right, the variation in Rainbow prices can be quite huge. Compared to the actual prices mentioned above at that particular shop, I have bought the equivalent (and seriously better coloured) Bosemani and Praecox at $8 and $6 for 5cm and 3.5cm fish respectively. This is less than 1/3 of the above prices and the colouration in each case was substantially better.

limegirl
BTW I am almost positive that Aquapets at Bondi Junction have two Lacustris at the moment. The were'nt labelled, and I don't know about the price, but they might be worth a phone call. Try to talk to Horst. I think they were in a tank with Splendida ... I would like some myself, I saw one at shop in kellyville there was one left and this one has no colour, not sure whether its female or its just because its on its own? Btw it was 40 bucks for 2 there, and they had one in their display looks heaps niiiice.
limegirl
Female rainbows are traditionally quite drab - and as such, quite hard to correctly identify! You always want to buy females from a reliable source, and avoid any that are too highly coloured, as they may have had a bit of trifasciata or splendida splendida thrown in to heighten the colour. And yes, a rainbow by itself is always gonna look pale and shy.
Daniel
Just letting you all know that I bought a georgeous pair of M. lacustrus for $8.50 each from a pet shop at Dee why / Harboard (harboard rd, near pittwater rd intersection) just a few days ago. The M. lacustrus at this shop were about 5cm and the colours was brilliant. They also had 4 or 5 other species of rainbows including M. praecox for around $7-$8 each. Rod54
Or who imports rainbows from PNG. No one imports rainbows from PNG(or any live fish for that matter).....all stock are locally bred in Australia from fish imported years ago....before the current regulations were enacted. FYI there is currently an application before Dept. Environment and Heritage to have Boesemani, Lacustrus, Praecox and Werneri join incisus on the allowable imports list. If these applications go through it should mean we are able to offer larger imported fish at a much cheaper price than what is currently the case. As with anything it is supply and demand If they are allowed in they will come from S/E asia breeding farms....NOT PNG There is no one in PNG set up to export them....and even if there was the cost of collecting "wild fish" for the species mentioned....would not be viable. I have brought back many species of wild caught rainbows as hand luggage.....20 years ago.
Daniel
Just saw some 5-6cm M. lacustrus yesterday at an lfs in the Auburn area for a whopping $59.95 per pair ! Ouch ! Colours were good, but not quite as good as the ones I got a couple of weeks ago from another lfs for $8.50 each !
