wui39
Hey guys and gals, Just for an experiment over the coming weeks, I will be trying a 2KW MH floddlight over a standard 4ft to see how the tank reacts. This will equate to about 4KW per sq metre of space. Results could be interesting. I expect raised temperature in the tank itself and possible algae bloom, but you never know what could happen. Why am I doing it? Well because I'm interested and I have the equipment Will let you all know how it goes.

Ash
holy snapping duck stuff! Where did you get a 2kW globe & ballast? biggest I've seen for aquarium or hydroponic use is 1kW, what is this beast meant to be doing?
wui39
Its a floodlight normally used for sports fields. Colour index is 6000K. Light globes are made by Philips. The system has a remote ballast and takes about 10 min to warm up since its not a hot strike version. Cost wise, the light is a sample from work so I'm just playing with it. Inreagrds to a power bill, I know the whole thing is sligtly impractical for the average person, but its just a fun thing to have a go at. I have a feeling that the overall result will be that its too bright for any real practical aquarium application anyway.

BlakeyBoyR
You're going to have to have the light at least a couple of feet above the tank mate, and as it is evaporation is going to be massive. I also think you will find 6500K will be very yellow, as most of the flood light style halogens are. Regardless, I can't wait to see the results mate, it's going to be verrrry interesting thats for sure!
canerod
I imagine the uv (and other) radiation will be off the scale at that close range, so i wouldnt have my fish under it. Bob
wui39
Yeah forgot to mention, I wouldn't have had any fish under it. Basically its just a test on plants. Just for a bit of info, attpeak light intensity the earth recieves about 1KW/sqm.
