D6C1
Hi all, I need to send a rather largish fish to melbourne. What are your experiences with Australian Mail and Virgin? Whats the procedure?
parkesg
Hey I have always used Virgin and never had a problem. Don't feed the fish for three days; get the correct size bags and a foam box. When bagging the fish add enough water to cover, add some stress coat. If the fish has sharp spines then double bag. Make sure the bags do not move around in the box i.e. add empty bags full with air. Create some large labels and attach to the box with the recipients details; name address phone number. Leave the box unsealed as sometimes they want to check contents. Seal at airport. Find out flight times from Virgin website. Be at the airport at about 1-1.30 hours prior to the flight departure. Tell them you are sending live fish, they will give you a consignment note. Fill it out. Call the recipient and tell them the consignment number - from this they can track their package. They cannot legally tell you the flight it will be on, however you should know approx. from their website. They charge based on weight. Basic charge of $55 I think this includes something like a free 4.5 kgs. HTH Grant
D6C1
Thanks Grant. Where do I get the foam boxes from? Where do they store the fish/boxes when they are in transit?
phatoscarlover
I know a few people arnt that keen on AAE but coming from a melbournian who has had to deal with both, AAE down here are much better IMHO. Ask your LFS for a foam box, usually they have spares. Id follow pretty much what Grant has said with everything else though Good luck!
