Fluval 304 motor issue

Has sitting down when I hear a crunching sound in the motor, thought it was clogged since I havent cleaned out the filter for a few months due to the HSC.

So I went and gave it a clean.

All clean, filter media all clean and I try again.

The sound happens again, so I guess the motor are having problems?

I know you guys cant actually tell because you cant hear the exact sound it makes, but if the motor of the filter isnt working properly is there anyway to fix it.

I think I bought it with 3 year warranty, will go bring it back to the fish shop if I cant resolve this.

Now my tank is running without a filter, hope it wont cause any issues until this is solved.

Which model 304 is it (3 have been produced) all though the last one is now 305 i beleive, (the ones that the motor head clamps clip up).

If its the first model i would suggest changing the shaft as the yellow holder part tends to warp after awhile if it runs dry for any reason.

The 2nd model shouldnt have any issues unless something has trapped and worn the impeller.

If you cant see anything physically wrong with it retuen it and have someone look at it ..

I was playing around with the impeller, and pretty muched stopped the noise.

The impeller was not inserted properly I think, I moved it abit and it stopped the noise.

But I cant figure out how it started to have the noise in the first place, I did not even touch the filter.

Another problem I have is another sound it makes.

It sounds like air has gone in and not functioning properly for 2 seconds, then runs back normal.

It happens once in a while, not all the time.

Just makes that kind of sound, what do you guys think it may be?

The intake is no where near air.

Hi

I had the second model fluval 304 from new. It kept a 3ftr clean for 6 years, but IMHO that model had a design flaw.

I experienced a similar noise and air bubbles would come out of the exhaust every 10 to 20 minutes and settle down again, over time this ruined the impellor. So I replaced the shaft/mounting and cover. It had the same noise. So I tried buying a new shut off assembly and tubing that did not work either - all fluval stuff $$$.

The top part of the filter distorts every time you take it off. It was the little black studs on the inside of the motor housing that was sucking in the air from the primer. The black studs are a keyed stud so you need to push the centre in to release (about 10 of them) and re-assemble. I did this a couple of times during the years as they seem to vibrate loose. Eventually I used self tapping screws and super glue (don't laugh it worked extremely well). Its gone to filter heaven.

I now have the new 404 and it seems most of the bugs have been sorted out. By the way I have used the old round based 203 for about 15 years and it has the original baskets in it and it has never given me any problems. Only use these one indoors because they are very quite, sumps fish room outside. So its the luck of the draw.
