Alan
Looks as if the popularity of small pleco's has been their undoing, at least here in Queensland anyway. When over 5,000 were landed and sold out within the first couple of weeks of them being permitted the inpectors here got twitchy noses and started looking a lot closer. As a result, the latest 3,000 L104 (the cheapies) and stuff were stopped in quarantine. We are not likely to see the likes of those fish or those prices ever again, at least here in Qld. Alan. Ash
Geez that really sucks I didn't think they'd be much of a threat in the wild?
wui39
Someone in quarrantine just want to make sure that they don't lose their job.
kevkoi
Well, they were suppose to import Dekeyseria pulcher but instead sent in Panaquolous maccus... What more can I say? After the number of complaints about sending the wrong fish, they again try to bring in another lot of L104?? What's up with those guys? Guess they'll now find out that the REAL L168 aren't so cheap and easy to get huh. Keep those P.maccus u got.... won't be seeing too many of those around after this. kevkoi
Rumour has it also that AQIS has sent a petition to remove even L168 from the importable list as the import of the correct species is hard to police. So, we might be back to square one again... no importable plecos. They seriously should have put H.zebra on the import list instead. Would have created far less problems. They're unmistakable, very expensive (so not many will be imported), and hard to get.
cobaltcraig
Hi Alan Thats a pity ,The L104 are a nice catfish .Anyone who has them must in away be happy that no more of those are going to come through I believe the numbers were more like 1500 in the first batch I hope the L168s are kept on the list for the hobbys sake Cheers Craig
Nigel
I would not worry about the L168. Its very hard to change anything on the import list once it has been put on there even for AQIS. I know they have asked for either all L numbers to be added or to take L168 off. I also know that neither will happen it will just stay as it is. I think you will find Heritage and Enviroment will tell AQIS to do there job and just live with it.
cobaltcraig
Hi Nigel I would also hope that to be the case using the common bristlenose as a example never been on the import list (correct me if i am wrong) and they have never turned up as a pest anywere in the wild cheers craig
Nigel
It just goes to show that AQIS are doing there job if all the L104 where sized in Brisbane. I think AQIS now know what L168 should look like so I dont think there will be any more problems. Lets hope.
wormboy
It just goes to show that AQIS are doing there job if all the L104 where sized in Brisbane. you mean doing their job now. I also know that neither will happen it will just stay as it is. thats reassuring, its nice to think that all the hard work that went into the application wouldnt be wasted. Cheers for your take Nigel as someone who deals with these issues regularly Given that the water is now under the bridge and the L104 are here now, being that they are common elsewhere they must breed fairly reliably. Lets hope we can make a sustainable population with the fish we have here already, surely we have enough to manage that. -Mat-
poxboy
An other 2,400 L104 's into the market in the comming week A significant number of "odd coloured" fish in this shipment, but all released by AQIS. The prospect of new species is looking better all the time. smile.gif Let's not make any waves and see what 'bobs up' on the QT Alan Don't suppose that had anything to do with AQIS stopping the import ? If you think they don't monitor forum's like this......think again.......
wui39
Of course they monitor, they probably learnt what L168 actually look like after our discussions.
Kimbo
As it says in the post probably form the amount of COMPLAINING from everyone that they didnt get the fish they ordered, which was probably a larger contributing factor than what was seen here on this site
gianniz
I second the motion to change this to allow importation of Zebra. However from what I have heard its going to be virtually impossible. They rejected Zebra due to it being totally adaptable to any conditions, and worst of all eats mainly meat! We'll just have to have our fingerscrossed maybe in the next 20 year they might reconsider it
