novafishy
If i transfer an established filter from an existing tank into a new one with dechlorinated water, how long can the filter be operating with the bacteria still alive without any fish in the tank? 1 week? I put in an established filter about a week and a half ago into a new tank that i'm setting up, but i've been so busy that i havent had the time to transfer my fish into that tank...would it still be ok to do so after a 1.5 weeks? thanks! patchy
i'm not too sure but i think the bacteria starts to die off after a day or so as there's just nothing to eat in the tank. Thats what i found in my newbie research days. try keeping it going with fishless cycling methods i reckon.
r.d.m
i reckon patchys right , just chuck a frozen prawn or some fish food in !
novafishy
So if i just chuck in some flakes and let it "rot" away, that would be the best way to go? its a 3ft x 1x1. thanks
Ash
There may well be some bacteria left - the ones that died off may well have fed the others - how many who's to say? Go the prawn & test - you may be lucky
novafishy
if i put the prawn in, how long do i leave it in there?

Ash
I guess a minimum of 3 days, then it will depend on whether you get ammonia/nitrite/nitrate readings I suppose?
