36" x 14" x 20" Tang setup

Cannula

Recommended Posts

It's a three footer, but it's 20" high.

Substrate will be sand and rocks will be stacked from about two thirds the height of the tank at one back corner to about mid tank where it will be substrate level. In the other half will be some rocks and shells.

The proposed fish are:

Rock area:

3-4 Julidochromis ornatus or transcriptus since they are smaller.

3-5 Neolamprologus brichardi, have three already.

Shell area:

3-4 Lamprologus brevis or ocellatus.

Open water:

3-4 small Cyprichromis leptosoma.

So all up 12-17 fish.

Any suggestions welcome. thumb.gif

3ft is probably a little small for leptosoma, they prefer to be in large schools as well

I would think the brichardi will probably dominate the tank, they will get very aggresive once breeding and the gombe's are no slouches either when defending their breeding site

Maybe I would sugest some Alto comp "shell variety" as an alternative

I wouldn't be putting the brichardi into a 'community' style tank, once they start to breed the other fish don't have a chance!

How big are the ones you have currently? Have you seen their teeth?

Thanks for the advice, since I have three brichardi already(1 x 2", 2 x 1.5") I was thinking about these fish now.

3 x brichardi (already have)

3-4 x occys

3 x mid water cichlids. I was thinking either Paracyprichromis or Cyprichromis. Paracyprichromis are smaller but from what I have read will use the substrate somewhat where as the Cyprichromis will not, not even if they spawn. If these are not a good idea for under 4' what open water Tang cichlids are?

Thanks!

I think the Paracyps will hang around the rock work a little more. You could probably keep the cyps in the 3ft but they won't be the most happy fish. That being said they are a great looking fish and I can see why you would want them.

In regards to another open water fish.....generally if their an open water fish they will like a big area of water to swim something the 3ft won't be great at.

I recommend you have a spare tank on hand so you can remove fish quickly if need be.

The fish you have selected are both very aggressive (my occies used to attack my hand on a regular basis when I was cleaning the tank) especially when spawning.

Give it a go but keep a very close eye on the fish.

If one species starts to breed you'll most probably have to remove the other species as Lamprologus spp. are step breeders and will quickly over run a tank with their swarms of fry.

Cheers

Mick
