Water Hardness

hi all

Can some explain if my thinking on carbonate hardness is right? I believe that it is used to stablise your PH but what is the right level? Take my saulosi breeding tank for example. It has a PH of 8.0, which seams to never vary. A GH of 300ppm and a KH of 70ppm, which, according to my test kits, should be associated with a low PH, but mine stays where it should be. I am using HAGEN test kits for all my readings. Also can someone tell how to convert to the german versions of these as they seem to be used in all the fish profiles I read.

The gh is very high and the kh is very low. The correct reading for Lake Malawi is GH 120ppm and KH 140ppm. The way to convert from ppm to german degrees is 1 dh = 17.8ppm. I hope this helps.

thanks nigel,

Are these hardness levels from the lake (wild) or what they should be in the aquarium? I was under the impression that most of the Malawi fish, in the aquarium had a dh of 10-20 and a dkh of 4-9? assuming i have them the right way around ie dh=gh and dkh=kh.
