Ducksta
Oscars and attitude Andy? Clearly you are yet to own a real American For personality red devil's, Looks, GT's.
ViS
I didn't say they were tough, just that they have attitude . I've had red devils and green terrors before, but that's the limit of my American fishkeeping
mezzacam
Convicts for sure ^_^ Females get a nice gold to them, Not a large fish, Have plenty of personality, and plenty of guts to back it up~! Also they get very nice finnage as they get older... And i love fish with nice finnage Cameron.
Ducksta
Cam, I am yet to find any Americans that don't get exceptional finnage with age (provided tankmates aren't constantly ripping it off ) They may not be in the same league as brichardi etc, but most of them get great fins. Andy, we must define attitude differently
Citypainter
Heros temporalis. The Chocalate cichlid. Graceful, spectacular colours, able to defend them selves. But you can put them in with gentle fish and they wont attack them. I have some breeding and they have learn't to be good parents. (3rd time around). They grow as big, maybe bigger than an oscar and they sulk like one when you move them or change things around. Plenty of personality. I reccommend them to everybody. vieja
obviously nobody counts mexico as part of america.... otherwise the classic Nandopsis managuensis (JAGUAR CICHLID) would have been mentioned much more.... pattern, colour, attitude... they have it all... i have a community tank with pair of jags, tiger oscar, red devil pair and one fiery-buM female salvini (all over 8") and i can tell you two things about jags. 1. they don't take crap from anything.... (male jag was last fish in and had control of the tank within 2 days) 2. jags HATE oscars... my oscar is bigger and, although i give it to him for effort, the jag smashes him constantly.... Ducksta
Female salvini over 8" Holy crap is all I can say, that would be pushing record size for species but female WOW.
vieja
Female salvini over 8" Holy crap is all I can say, that would be pushing record size for species but female WOW. ← may have got a bit carried away... salvini is a shorter body type than the rest.... but is definately a good 7"..... and don't let anyone tell you they're a placid fish... i saw it woop, and i mean woop my female RD (a good 10" fish) less than a week ago... forgive my mistake... but remember i am talking about fish (you always add a bit.... )
