stand pipe for sump

hey i was wondering if you have to have a stand pipe that come to just below the water surface in the weir or can you have a very short one only an inch or two from the bottom. if you block the water sounds by using a pre filter what difference will it make and are there any advantages of having a durso pipe

The closer to the top, the more the water noise is suppressed. Obviously, there is less pre-filter area too as the water from the bottom of the weir won't be disturbed as much so would be dead filter space.

Gotta weigh up what you want

I dont know why you would want to have a stand pipe right to the top inside a weir. Isnt the water at the bottom of the weir just gong to become stagnant or am I missing something.

I was of the believe that the water sound you get in wiers was due to lack of water flow. If you want to silence the water sounds then restrict the water passing through the inlet to sump or increase the size of your water pump in the sump

I dont know if my idea is right, maybe someone with a bit more experience with weirs could answer your question

Josh some of the noise from a weir can be the water cascading over the weir if there is a big enough drop to the water below. I use a standpipe which raises the water level behind my weir so that the water only falls about 4 inches. I now get more noise from the sump than I do from the weir smile.gif

Yes burgoid, stuffing your weir full of media will help muffle any noise, but will also increase the risk of your tank overflowing if it becomes dirty and/or blocked. You are also introducing yet another area of media to clean and maintain.

Do a google for "durso standpipe" and you'll see a few variations on a similar theme which will help to quieten things down.

Actually, with a durso or similar standpipe you could have the water level in the weir quite high yet take the draw in point closer to the bottom - negating stagnation & noise in one hit. Pre-filtering would still work fine too.

Well, more compact/cheaper than a durso - I use this method on my tanks.

I have 25mm ID standpipes & 50mm ID outer tube, with the bottom removed at an angle. Water is drawn up from the bottom with the standpipe still setting the water level. Cause the top is open there's no syphon effect, but it shuts up the gurgling/sucking noises that a straight standpipe makes.

If you do it in a weir, then you can just pack foam/wadding around the outer pipe & weir chamber
