barnesy
Ive got a new 7x2x2, and Im still undecided about what to put in it. im posting a similar question on the tank buster forum to see what advise i get. I was thinking maybe kribensis or rams. Small egg layers, any suggestions? is it a major waste of tank space? how may pairs would i be able to put in there without chaos breaking loose? Is it possible to put multiple breeding pairs in this tank with successful spawnings? thanks in advance.
BlakeyBoyR
It depends. Do you want to go planted or not planted? African or American? If it were me I'd probably go a giant planted tank, a slice of the amazon so to speak. Lot of plants, driftwood etc. As for fish you could keep kribs, rams and a few different apistogrammas in a tank that size! There would be so much to look at. Get some imported high quality dwarves and hundreds of tetras/rainbowfish and you've got a mass of colour!
Rod54
I'm with BlakeyBoyR Given the number of apisto's available (even though Pelvicachromis family is a favorite) I'd go Amazon only Discus, angels, school of neons, school of rummynose, pencilfish, hachets, black phantoms,corys,bristlenose,,2/3 species of apisto...trifaciata,agassizi,borelli....at least 2pair of each. Plenty of timber and plants(co2 unit and good lighting) NO Africans or Natives Probably cost a lot more to fit out than big fish or Africans with rocks and require a bit more maintenance but to me it is the classic community tank! barnesy
thanks guys! if i was to go for small fish i would defnately deck it out with plants and drift wood. if i were to put in some kribs and\or rams how many pairs could i put in and would they have enough space to spawn and raise their fry? DanceswithDingoes
7x2x2 for Kribs Id be looking at some garbagebag val, a couple of bags of 00 marble dust and a school of spilos or dimis.....totally awesome The tropical setup will cost you a squillion to maintain plants, ask Craig Thompson about his and it was half that size
gingerbeer
How many could you put in a tank that size. More than you could afford From what I have read about the populations in nature, fish densitys per square meters are measured in 100's The beauty of Apistos in big tanks is you get to see the full range of habits with male superterritorys, female territorys, sneaker males. For each species I would aim at 2 males and 8 females. Aim for fish that can be told apart if you ever decide to pull apart to catch any babies. I and a four foot with cacatoides set up and the male had four little women with babies in different parts of the tank and was flirting with another. rams and kribs will not so the same level of behaviour. Plant costs depend on how serious a plant tank you go for. A plant tank doesn;t have to go down the line of full blown CO2/fertiliser and lights galore. Use crypts, swords and anubias and need very little light. subdued lighting works better for Apistos too. Oh yeah, I am jealous. Steve
Wilsta
I think dwarfs in a tank that size is a waste. All that space and you want dwarfs I guess thats what your into but I would be biased and say get some eartheaters they'd look awesome in a tank that size. wormboy
Nice Tank Id go with Ginge, plants are definitely the way to go! and not all plants need the special love and attention you may think. My 8x2x2 is decked out with large river stones, large bits of wood and TONS of Java fern and it looks absolutely schmick (if I say so myself ). There are also some crypts and anubius here and there but they don't much contribute to the ambiance. don't underestimate monospecific plantings, they can look great in large tanks like yours. As for fish, Id go for the dwarfs probably apistos rather than kribs as the latter can still get aggressive in a tank that big (personal experience ). Also fill up the upper layers of water with fish because your cichlids probably wont move too far from the gravel. Perhaps fish like congo tetras as they get big but not aggressive, and cardinals for some colour (Pencil fish are also highly underrated, nice suggestion Rod). And of course compulsory loracarids (I hear that clown Pekoltias are now allowable imports, heh heh) Be sure and post a photo or two when you set it up. PS It may take a little while before everything gets nice an jungley (it wont happen in a minute........but it will happen) but it is certainly worth the effort, much more interesting than a tankbuster! BlakeyBoyR
waste? ... WASTE?!??! Careful mate, look what forum you're in ... thems fighting words Hehehehe It all depends on what you want mate. If you decide to go dwarves, do yourself a favour and go apistogrammas, you cannot compare the behaviour of apistogrammas and kribs, they're nothing alike. Eartheaters also look very cool, I can agre on that. Perhaps check some profiles out on the web (google) or at cichlid-forum. Lastly you could go Africans. A tank full of large predators can look very very nice provided you aquascape it properly and are buy good quality fish. A plant tank doesnt need to cost you a squillion, you can stick to low light plants and drift wood and achieve quite a nice effect. We all have our own personal tastes, but the bottom line is, what are you looking for?
barnesy
After alot of thinking, google searching and bank account checking ive decided to re arrange my fish room and have this tank set up for breeding dimi comps. this tank will no longer be for display purposes. its too big for me to make it look good. i didnt want to put in any substrate but i guess i have to now to anchor in the plants. is there a way around this? dont worry dwarf cichlid lovers ive got some 2x2x2 to fill with the big fellas. once i get my fish room up and running il swing in some photos. thanks everyone for their input! barnesy. DanceswithDingoes
wise choice you can make attractive 'val' from non scented green plastic bags cut into strips, twisted and anchored with small rocks buried in a marble chip substrate. This will recreate the natural ambush areas for dimis and the marble will buffer the ph. dont forget to post pics
AdamR
A bit off topic, Just wanted to argue a point to BlakeyBoy! Kribs have as much personality as apistos, especially with brood care, and both parents taking turns to look after the babies. Given i still prefer the apistos for looks, i still think kribs have great personalities. Back on topic, id love to see a tank set up for a colony of Dimi comps, they are one aggressive but beautiful fish.
DanceswithDingoes
And you could still put kribs and apistos in there

AdamR
Fair call Blakeyboy! Each to their own. Id love to be deciding what to put in a 7ft tank. It would cost a fortune to decorate tho. Blakeyboy what shop do you work at if you dont mind me asking. feel free to PM me the answer if youd prefer, or not up to you.

DanceswithDingoes
Barnesy, about 2 years ago some incredible german bred dimis came into the country if you can come across their progeny you will have some nice fish. The males are incredibly coloured naturally. Thank Craig Thompson for the garbagebag val, it was his I first saw. Just make sure its unscented. BlakeyBoyR
I agree, very well aquascaped! With a back to nature style background, or one of the DIY rockwalls, that would look like a slice of south america
Nornicle
was abit brief with the previous post but my plan (except for a crappy disease that stalled it) was to throw in 6 or so pair of dwarves and just let them go crazy the panda cories have already had children in the tank although i think its a little cool for the sterbais the breed? wormboy
Great tank Nornicle!, lots of depth. What lights and fertilizers do you use? the lighting pattern and intensity look like halides or something similar rather than fluros -worm-
