burgoid
hey guys im still tossing up which to get for me up and coming 210gal (800L) which ever i get it will be the sole fish expect mayb a large leopard pleco (already 14'') i know dovii's are the easiest to come buy and that i can get the cichla mono's off sooty if i can find someone for a group buy. but how much will i be looking to pay for a 4'' umbie. finally wat would ur personal opinon be. cheers
pride
What will be the dimensions of the tank? If you are getting the fish small you could maybe get all 3 and grow them out alittle until they start wanting that big tank for themselves and by then you will know which one you will want to keep? Eddie Salita
Good idea pride. Up here anyway, umiberum come in spurts. Even then they are quite cheap. Last month I saw a tank with a hundred or so @5-7cm for $15 each. A cichla is not in the league of the other two for aggression IMO. I wonder how a Leporinus fasciatus would go with the mean americans??? anyone keep them together??? Cheers, Jason
benno
Mate you could have an umbie pair, just make sure you keep your divider around lol. Benno

burgoid
do you reckon silver dollars would be ok as dithers with a dovii?
Ash
probably for a year they might be, I'd think a full grown male would chomp them tho Umbee's like a 2JZ, it will decimate all! (F&F quote)
Peter_Gun_Riff
umbiee for sure ive got juvies atm and their aggression is by far the biggest they make my jag and RD look soft and they are only 3-4 inches
burgoid
yer ok. are umbies as personable as dovii's though

Eddie Salita
Burgoid, sorry for the slow reply. Its was at smiths aquarium, sandgate road, boondal. It was a couple of months ago so I dont know If there is any left. Hope you get some, I've always wanted an umbee, but dont have a tank to dedicate. They are dovii killers so I'm told. Good luck, Jason
burgoid
ok cool. im not to sure about dovii killers though. dont they only get to about 24-26 inch.
benno
it would be awesome to house a pair of dovii and a pair of umbies in the same tank, something is telling me youy would need a tank of around 1000 gallons though lol. Benno
Eddie Salita
im not to sure about dovii killers though. dont they only get to about 24-26 inch Yeah maybe a slight exaggeration, but if anyone can do it............ Only 24 inches.............that is two feet or 60cm!!! when was the last time you ever saw a wolf bigger than that . Dovii do get that big, but I doubt the'd get much bigger in a tank. Ash
Reading some of the owners experiences with umbee's (just via google), the "tankbuster" tag is accurate, as they try to attack anyone they don't know through the glass - 50+cm of muscular fish throwing itself at glass it's good - they sounded like RD/midas except 70% bigger and 70% more agressive! Peter_Gun_Riff
just cause of its smaller size to a dovii dosent meen it wont be able to do seriouse damage if they were in a tank togeather id put money on umbee mine are only small and id put them up against an oscar or JD with confidence altought i wouldnt dont that lol
burgoid
im not doubting the ability of a umbie to damage im just saying that if u were to put a full grown umbie and a full grown dovii together the dovii would win. thats all lol. put wat i really want to now is weather i should get a dovii umbie or mono. Eddie Salita
I wouldnt bet on it myself. Nor would I want to see it. They arent called blue monster for nothing. Personally I would think about the umbee or mono, becasue they are a fair bit more active than a dovii. Cichla are spectacular eaters too. Wolf's can sometimes be guilty of just sitting around on the bottom. Just my 2 cents. Cheers, Jason
Peter_Gun_Riff
id still put money on the umbee but we shouldnt get a fish because of its aggression we shoud get it cause of its stunning colour and/or personality and maybe some aggression lol
burgoid
its now down too Umbie vs Dovii what should it be.
Peter_Gun_Riff
UMBEE their colour is way superiour to the doviis more active and you dont need such a big tank ive only know of one dovii better then a umbee and it was line bred and has since died he had blue fins with a lighter blue body i have a picture some were on my computer but ill have to find it dovii VSumbee
burgoid
do you reckon you could house a dovii in a 72x24x28 for life
Eddie Salita
do you reckon you could house a dovii in a 72x24x28 for life I really dont see why not. I'd be happy with that for my umbee. Bigger is always better of course. 12mm glass would be good between a 26" umbee and the floor maybe...... .......... But seeing as it may end up all his, should be cool IMO Cheers, Jason
