plant filtration

I am looking at supplementing my "normal" filtration with root filtration from terrestrial plants, but have been told by plant people that some plants exude poisons from the root system. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Not necessarily true. They may release hormones too. dntknw.gif

Anyway, monsteria, philodendrons have ben used by discus keepers before. With the latter growing roots down into the tank providing extra cover for the fish.

Here is a couple of links for ya: link

Spoke to a nursery man recently about it who said Philadendrons did release chemicals, but I have also seen them be recommended on things like the krib. Bit confusing!

I think I will just give it a go!

Thanks for the reply, champ!

I'd be inclined to think either there's a different species of plant ever so slightly in the US that they are referring to on thekrib, or the chemicals aren't dangerous to fish. *shrugs*

I assume aquatic plants aren't an option?

The tank is already well planted - I just feel like experiamenting with filtration.

I am an incredibly anal tank maintainer, so I have never had a use for heavy duty filters - I just use cheap japanese filters of various types!

Thought it would be nice to try some different natural set ups, without going the whole hog and putting a "proper" hydroponic filter on top of the tank.
