Books on Tanganyikan Cichlids

I would like to buy some books on Lake Tang cichlids. There are 2 major books by Konings:

1. Tanganyikan Cichlids in their natural habitat - approx $120

2. Back to Nature Guide - Tanganyika Cichlids - approx $45

Does anybody have an opinion on which is the better book and what their respective strengths are? I have tried a few shops in the city to hope to have a browse but nobody stocks them.

Cheers

Well mate, you get what you pay for. BTN is a great book for $45 IMO, lots of good pictures, some brief profiles on common species. I cover to cover read it in not long at all.

NH is a bloody fantastic book though. It is ALOT more in depth. More photo's than you can handle in a single sitting, with photo's identifying subtle (and obvious of course) differences in geagraphical varients of different species.

Either book is a great buy, and both will prove invaluable.

Ok I have both books and they pretty much complement each other, some of the pics are the same, as you would expect , but the info is rather different, in content as well as set out.

Back to nature guide to tangs is set out in family groups, is consice, a few pics of the different species in different localities. the info is very strait forward and is focosed on keeping these fish in the aquarium, set out in titles that cover, what to expect, in regards to maintenance, breeding, food, habitate, distribution etc very handy for quick to find info..

The tangs in their natural habitat (the big yellow one) is more about just that, Ad Konnings experiences, and observations about the fish he has seen in his many years of diving the lake, mainly focused on distribution, life and behaviours of the fish, in encompases a lot of information, and is a book that you can sit down to read

Both books are highly recomemded, i obtained my copies from cichlid press Australia a few years ago at very resonable prices, ie both delivered for less than $130, ( remember about 3 years ago) but at the time it was the cheapest place i found, And the distributer is a champion to deal with. i found then via the net , cant remeber of hand, or age of aquariums sells them i think from memory at pretty good rates.
