Wilsta
Hey guys I am having difficulties with one of my tanks the water has gone green. It has been like that for a few days. I bought some Purigen to combat this but I am not so sure if it will work. Is there anything i can do to get rid of it. I understand that it maybe a bacteria bloom/or algae bloom. What do you suggest I do?
grungefreek
I just went thru a GW experience. The best way apparently is a UV sterilser or a diatom filter. I didnt have the money to buy either one of these, so i went for a 4 day complete blackout, worked a charm. Some people say u can WC it out, but i would just go the blackout, pretty easy. Then find out whats causing the GW. Investigations by Tom Barr suggest GW is caused by ammonia spikes. Grunge

rosco
Hi I poseted this on another cichlid forum so I hope this helps: I had similar problems with 2 tanks that were running for a similar amount of time and it took ages to clear. No phams helped. I had a UV sterisler on the system and it cleared up in a day or so. I left it on the system for a month or so removed it the bloom was back within a few days. So I think that a UV steriliser will only help while it is running you need to get to the cause. I believe that the problem that I had related to phosphate levels in the tank. I was very slack and I did not really clean the substrate in the first years of these tanks running (I was using white sand). So what I did was over a period of 2 weeks for tank 1 (I did a quarter of the tank ever 3-4 days) I sphioned out the sand washed it and replaced it. At the same time I also did a 30% water changes and did a good clean of my cannister filter pipes (I have a fluval 304) and it cleared within that period. Since then I have planted the tank out with java fern and it seems to have stablised. I tried the same on tank 2 but it did not work. In the end I reduced my water changes to 20% weekly and added more bio-filter media to the filter and it took about 4 weeks to clear and now it is crystal clear and also planted out. But in that time my salousi bred like wild fire and it did not even know it so when it cleared I have half a dozen fry that I fished out from under rocks. So it was not all that bad I don't have a definitive answer ofr you but I hope that helps Water movement might also be a problem so it might not hurt to add another powerhead. Wilsta
Thanks for your help rosco, The tank is slowly returning to clear after 3 days of complete darkness I may still have to give it a few more days hopefully this works. it was pretty awful at first as the visibilty was extremely bad now i can see all the way through but the water is still slighty cloudy and has a green ting to it. I will syphon out another quarter of the tank water tomorrow.
