Scienceman
I have recently aquired a juvinile red empress that looks to be on the verge of developing colour. It seems to have 3 very faint egg spots on the ventral fin but in pictures I have seen, this species does not have egg spots. And another breeder also thought this strange. Do I have a hybrid? Maybe these are normal and will fade as the fin colours red?
j.s
Many colored up male red empresses dont appear to have egg spots because the anal fin becomes all red - but I've also seen many with egg spots - in my opinion its normal and I dont think you should rule it out as a cross just because of the egg spots. Hope this helped.
BlakeyBoyR
I wouldn't deem it a hybrid simply because of egg spots, however there have been quite a few peacock/empress hybrids going around in LFS. Maybe whack a picture up for us?
Ducksta
I picked up these fish from the auction. They look as much like juvie empress as I have ever seen, although I admit to not having seen alot. Not sure if there is any kind of privacy issue's but wondering if maybe the NSWCS could suss out the source here? Just for peace of mind.
BlakeyBoyR
The only time I ever purchased red empress retail was from a western sydney LFS and they turned out to be hybrids much to my dismay. They then argued with me as to whether they were indeed hybrids after numerous people on the old SCP forums told me they were. Sorry, thats besides the point. My point IS that at the time I was told by people on the SCP forums that quality, non-hybridised red empress are hard to find. I dont know how true this is but since hearing that I have seen a lot of 'not quite right' looking specimens.
YeW
Do we have pics?
Scienceman
Sorry YeW but I am still deciding which digital camera to get. Anyway the fin is starting to colour up and the spots are very difficult to see and probably not visable in a photo. Also the fin is often folded making it difficult to see. I would really appreciate it if it is possible to source the parents as Ducksta suggested as I have two red empress, presumably from the same parents and I would hate to be breeding hybrids or pass one on to someone else to breed with.
