BlakeyBoyR
In theory you should be able to go as wide as you like without having to use thicker glass. It is the height of the tank you have to watch out for, not the width. However, I'd think it would be common sense that if you're going to have a 6' tank that is 3' wide and only 20" tall, with that amount of water, it might be a better idea just to get the thicker glass to be on the safe side. I know i would.
canerod
You need the advice of a tank builder here, but in the interim i would suggest that once you get above standard width tanks you would probably need thicker bottom glass if nothing else. anchar
Up to 18" wide you can get away with 6mm bases. Anything wider than that I would recommend 10mm (marginally more expensive than 8mm), otherwise they will crack. It is no worth the risk IME. The sides are fine in 6mm up to 24". merjo
