Thin fish

Recommended Posts

Recently i have noticed one of my electric yellow males, getting a sunken belly, It appears to be the only one at this stage.

It hasnt got a real lot of interest in food, and staying in its own little area.

My question is, would this have anything to do with the flashing mentioned in my other article in the last couple of days?

Is it worms or something else?

Should i treat it with a medicine even if i have doubt in diagnosis?

Like i mentioned in my flashing article i have added some rock saltand raised the temp to 28c

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Eaglebarret,

Are you sure this is a male have you vented this fish to double check as this is the best way to check males from females???

To me it sounds more like a female with the sunken belly as after they release their eggs and take them in their mouths they have an empty tummy so to speak and they sit around for the next 3 weeks not eating or swimming much just staying out of the way of the other fish. So this is my guess that your male could actually be a female as some symptoms sound familar to when i had a breeding colony, at one stage i thought i had only males as alot of them showed male character then i think in the end i had about 9 females i counted and they still showed the male sign but i think that was to stop the bullying of the male to mate.

Well that is my 2 cents worth which is not much these days. blush.gifblush.gif

well, im pretty sure its a male electric yellow, but now you have me thinking.

Maybe i will just keep an eye on it for now.

There are other males in the tank, therefore could it be the less dominant one staying out of the way, maybe stressed from the dominant male?

Hi Eaglebarret,

Just a quick thought I know its not 100% accuract but with males they tend to have the black stripe thru the eye when in breeding mode so that is another thing to look for as its only males that have this, most males do have the black anal fin but as i said i had a few females that had black fins also so i could not be sure i used the eye and venting them to be 100% in my case and seemed to work.

Hope this helps do you have any pics of the fish in question you can email me a pic to my email which is not the same as on the forum now its

Ok it has been a couple of days since i have got back to this topic but, my electric yellow hasn't got better , but hasnt got worse either.

How long should it take to recover if it's from laying eggs like misty stated?

If its a male , would it be possible that it has been caused by bullying from other yellow males?

Why don't you catch him/her, put it in a fry saver and get it back to conditon by letting it relax and feeding it twice a day? Sometimes i have a girl or two that is thin from laying excessive amounts of eggs. If it is a boy and has been bullied, some time in a fry saver will do it good. Just make sure the fry saver is big enough for the fish to go in, so it relaxes.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or girl, even if she has recently spat, she will be hungry and should be eating. If it’s a boy, even if there is some aggression around, it won’t put him off his food. And if the aggression was so bad that it did, he would be in tatters somewhere in a corner.

Yellows suffer from wasting. This is a difficult thing to fix. Auburn Aquarium, a sponsor on this page, sell a worming tablet that may (or may not) be of help. It will be a good idea to quarantine the fish as someone mentioned. Do so, and get some of the worming tablets from Anthony. Failing this, it may be better to practice some euthanasia with the fish.

If it is wasting, it can be a bugger to get rid of. The worming tablet I mentioned is mixed/soaked with the food, and is ingested by the fish, so you could easily treat the whole tank. I don’t remember, did you say the yellow was eating or not? If he is not eating it becomes more difficult.

I forgot to say too, the comments that fish may be a female holding, if it is, you should be able to peek inside the mouth to see if there are any fish in there, as yellow keep there mouth open just a little bit. If it is a girl, and has been holding for a while you’ll have fish not eggs, and the yellow young will be a dark colour in the mouth, and easy to spot.

I expect you are correct and that it is a boy, and that it has wasting. So quarantine it, if it is eating dose it up with the tables (crushed and soaked in the food) I mentioned. If the fish won’t eat reprepared food, try doing it with some live food such as wrigglers. Put only enough water in a small separate container that the wrigglers stay a bit more than wet, and put the crushed tablets in there and let them soak for say 30 minutes to an hour. Then feed those. If the fish is not eating, and this doesn’t work to coax the fish into changing its mind, and it was my fish, I would be considering the “concrete kiss”…..

Hi Eaglebarret,

I got your pics some were a bit fuzzy and stuff but i could see that to me it looks like its a boy as C.Thompson has stated and possibly has worms , I remember my Electric blue having the same/similar problem I bought some tablets called "Paracide" when I used them i had good results in my standard 6 foot tank i had to use 9 tablets i would put the medication in and then walk down the other end so the fish would swim thru it and this was the easiest way for me my fish survived. sorry i carnt be much more help but i did buy the tablets at Trans Aquarium at Canley Vale.

Thanks for looking at them misty.

I have seperated him and put him a seperate container and treated with some tablets. he is not eating at all, so i suspect if they are not eating the tablets will take no affect?

If this is the case then it may leave me with no choice.

If it is wasting, which i am sure it is, should i be worried about the other fish in the tank? i am not real keen on treating the whole tank if no other fish is showing symptoms and the tablets may affect the plec and bristlenose.
