petetong
HI, I have been keeping some electric blue fry for about 4 months in a mature tank with a female siamese fighter and some bristlenose cats... All of a sudden one afternoon, the electric blues started to die, they got extremely "dizzy", unable to stay upright then floated to the bottom and lay there until they died. Every time I checked the tank another few were dead, over about 24 hours I had lost all of them which was about 18. Part way through this I removed 4 or 5 into another tank but they suffered the same fate on the same day... I have now gotten around to cleaning the tank out and found in amongst the substrate hundreds of very tiny worm-like creatures, I have never fed worms in this tank and they are smaller and skinner blackworms... would there be a connection with these worms and the deaths?? thanks, pete
YeW
Pete - When did this happen? Was it during "warmer" weather? ie: 30+? Worms in the gravel (and on the glass) are often a sign of overfeeding. Did you check for ammonia or nitrite at the time of the deaths? Did you do any water changes or filter cleans close to the times of the deaths. What size tank is it - what kind of filter are you running? Did you add any "buffers" or anything else to the tank?? Are the other fish unaffected? petetong
thanks for comments so far, this was all last week. yeah I checked the ph and it was fine, I had recently done a water change and the temp was at a steady 27... I didn't check the amonia but due to the recent water change assumed it was fine. the other fish were unaffected and are now living happily in my 5 foot tank. THis happened in a 70 litre tank. there were 18 small (1 cm each) electric blue fry. pete
YeW
Pete - Get an ammonia test kit. Well worth it. What amount of water did you change? Did you clean the filter also?
