willsy01
Hi all, Had a bit of search but couldn't find anything......i've got an Aqua One AR980 running at the moment and the inbuilt filter just doesn't cut the mustard. That said, i'm looking into getting a canister. I'll have to drill a couple of holes on the back of the hood to feed the inlet and outlet through but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Is it OK to just transfer my current filter media (just the matrix and maybe a bit of sponge) into the canister and let it rip?
Eaglebarret
Yes thats fine, as long as the water from the tank is not straight out of the tap, meaning the water has been in the tank several days.
mianos
If you want to use the existing media in from the overhead in the canister yes, move it all over and fire it up. You should not have any problems at all in the case, specially considering your whole tank of water is intact. When I moved from one to the other I ran both for a month then shut down the overheard (I'm conservative). I measured the water parameters every few days afterwards and they stayed stable. I never lost a fish in the process and they looked happy (and I do look at them a lot!). YMMV.
MoliroMan
i have a Aquaone AR850 and have managed to fit 2 Eheim 2217 and one Prof II 2028 without drilling any holes!!! There is usually space in behind the overhead and between the light and overhead! I am still running my overhead filter. HTH DAve
GTR73
I was in the same situation last year, except I had an Internal Otto with the three sponge cups. I just added a new External Jebo (and left the internal in my tank), chucked brand new ceramic noodles in it, filled it with the established tank water, and cranked it up. Didn’t have any problems at all and about two months later removed the Otto internal altogether to start another tank downstairs. You should have no dramas doing the same as long as you’re happy to leave your Internal in, just to be on the safe side, while the External gets established (which usually takes 4-6 weeks). Some would say not entirely necessary to leave the Internal going in the interim, but I didn’t want to take any risks. HTH
willsy01
My Fluval 304 arrived yesterday . Set it all up but had trouble priming it though......it just wouldn't pull water down into the unit. Had to suck the outlet to get it flowing. It's whisper quiet and the water was crystal clear this morning.
willsy01
Wow, didn't realise it's been over 2 years since I added the Fluval.........my new question, what's the best/safest way to add another canister to the tank? I'm starting to remodel the tank on the weekend.......big clean, new fish (selling off the current ones) etc etc. I've seen a Jebo 900lph canister come up for sale for $100, second hand. I'm going out on a limb here and assuming it'd be best to get new media for it? There's no knowing if there are any nasties lurking in the current stuff......which raises another question, is it just as financially viable to buy a brand new canister based on the $100 + cost of all new media for the Jebo? D6C1
Just whack it on mate. Your already established tank and filter will speed up the new filter and bring it to a beneficial state in no time.

For $127 you can get an Aqua One CF1200 (1200lph) from one of our sponsors, its kicks the pants off the jebo and is brand new and comes with media. Aaaaand had free postage. After 2 years im surprised you remembered your username and password for ace Welcome Back
Lonx
I was pretty sketical of the CF1200's until I picked up a second hand one when I bought my last tank. Overall its been great, along with a AC70/300 HOB on a 3ft tank. I clean the AC every 3 weeks at the moment and its hardly dirty at all. Can't really compare it to my Eheim 2217 as I haven't used them both on the same tank in the past. The aqua one seems to have more flow, but that doesn't necessarily mean it filters better.
