All Altolamprologus spawning at the same time

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if anyone else is experiencing similar things but I noticed that the recent hot weather seems to encourage all my Altolamprologus calvus 'black' and compressiceps 'gold' to breed at the same time.

I have 8 adult Altolamprologus calvus 'black' (4m+4f) in my tank and all the females are currently hiding in their barnacles with a single male chasing everyone else away. As far as I can see, all females have eggs in their hiding holes. With the Altolamprologus compressiceps 'gold' (1m+3f), the male has only managed to coerce 2 females to spawn with him.

In my experience, spawning amongst Altolamprologus species seems to take place in pairs ie. only one female seems to spawn with a male at a time. Although this may induce other females to spawn in the next few weeks, I have never noticed all females spawning at the same time.

Do you believe the recent hot weather has anything to do with this change in behaviour? Other fish in the tank don't seem to be as horny for some reason.
