RPS13X
I am very new to keeping Cichlids, i have only had them for the past 9 months or so. i had an electric blue much like the one in this link link and now it is very grey. He used to be the king of the tank until a Hongi was added, then after that he seemed to lose his colour. They all have their seperate hiding holes and they dont chase each other around that much........ Would that be the reason the colour is gone? Thanks Ryan
Mbuna
it would be a dominance thing. mbuna tend to be more aggressive/active than haps (e blues). so your electric blue is probably intimidated by the hongi. maybe you should work out which you like the best (mbuna or haplochromines) and house fish of the same type. Ducksta
How long did you have the electric blue before adding the hongi? what does the store you bought your fish from feed them? I think you should try and find out, and let us know so we can have a better attempt at solving the problem.
Serial-Cichlid
Ryan What sizes are they in comparison to each other? If diet isn't an issue, it could well be dominance or vice versa. if you have a spare or separate tank setup, you could separate the species to find out for sure. RPS13X
To be homest i think i may have purchased them at the same time. They are both about the sames size...may 1-2 inches max. At this stage i only have the one tank so i am unable to seperate them. It does not really worry me to much, was just curious. I guess when i started buying cichlids i was not informed that there were multiple types of african's and the likes.....so much to learn.. Anyone recommend a good book? Bijengum
At that size I would be surprised if an Electric blue would have coloured up. Looks like the shop may have used colour enhancing food to sell the blues on quickly.
Rol&Jas
Hongi is a more dominant fish definitely and could make the electric blue lose some colour, but not much. I think you need to check the sizes again. If you bought the fishes 9 months ago and if they are between 1 and 2 inches that means that you were not feeding them at all. RPS13X
The E Blue and the Hongi are only about 3 months old now. Maybe the shop did feed them some colour enhancing food...... he did keep the colour for about 2-3 weeks after i bought it and then he went totally grey with dark vertical stripes. nannat
does he seem morbid and always black.?this can happen to a fish if it has been harrassed endlessly.or do you mean just grey or maybe brownish and bars not showing any blue colour? MikeWs Fish
I'm with David on this one. Sounds like a case of the damn 'dodgy synthetic' colour enhancing food. I'd mention the brand but it might not be a good idea. You can even buy it in the 'blue' colour. I can't belive people would go out of their way to feed fish this crud. Suppose it might be profitable to a greedy LFS owner.

Yeah, grey brownish and not showing any blue colour. I guess it may be the food situation. All the other cichlids seems fine including this one. If anything he gets left alone the most in the tank.......he just seems to go on his merry way all day long
