Tank building

A friend of mine recently gave me another tank, which he had started to make himself. It’s made from 5mm glass and is approximate 3.5 - 4ft long and about 2.5ft high. blink.gif

I have noticed that some of the joins whilst liberally covered in silicone are not 100% flush. Is this a problem and should I be adding corner brackets/edging?

Also I will have to build lids for it, given that the glass is 5mm thick how wide will the centrepiece need to be?

Are there any other considerations for a tank with these dimensions you think I should know about before I invest any time in doing it up?

2.5ft High! If that is the case then the glass is not strong enough. On a 24inch high tank you normally see 10mm thick glass. It might even be more at 2.5ft but I have never had a tank so tall. But that we be my concern with this thin! huh.gif

Was the tank originally going to be used for reptiles?

The 2.5 foot mark is a tough call for 10mm glass most I have seen are 12mm

The other drama for a tank that hight is lighting you need some strong lights if you want plants to grow in there.

Your tank volume is about 950L that is a big tank. Do you like your friend and want it to stay that way? ie do you trust his tank building prowess

Post some pic let some of the pros have a look ie (not me)

Just some things to think about before you fill the thing up, also at that volume a 10mm base may not be enough

Don’t mean to be all doom and gloom I just don’t want to find your next post to be a sadsmiley02.gif one
